three on the tree problem

Hi all..I have a 1977 chevy pickup with three on the tree. Just lately it has been getting stuck in gear.. first gear for the most part. When i try to shift from first to second it gets jammed up in the neutral position(sometimes it will come out of first into neutral, other times it wont and only appearing to be in the neutral position) somehow and will not change.. any ideas why? Thanks.

Re: three on the tree problem

linkage is worn in the coulum would be my guess, not likely your trans but anything is possible .check the linkage under the hood. last three in tree I had was `84 F-150, had my hand on shifter when i hit Bambi . didn`t do the coloum shifter any favours .......LOL

Re: three on the tree problem

Before tearing into the steering column check under the hood first. The bushings might be worn out where the linkage hooks up and the same on the tranny where the shifting rods hook up. Replace these and grease the shifting parts good if this don't correct your problem you will need to tear into the column or go to a three in the floor.
