Distributor Noise

My 85 Cutlass has a knock coming off of the distributor, I have no idea what causes it, it comes and goes although lately it seems to come more than go.

I changed the cap, rotor, ignition coil, plugs and wires not long after I bought it and not long after is when I noticed the knock, all the parts are the correct ones and were installed correctly. Outside off it being some other problem, could it just be a defective piece that I installed?

Re: Distributor Noise

if the caps not centered or the caps loose(not on straight) ,
the rotor could be hitting the cap.

Is distributor lockdown tight, and not letting the Dist. move?

Could also be the distributor gear or shaft ...

Re: Distributor Noise

The cap is on tight and straight, I had thought that might have been the problem too at first. The distributor bolt is tight and is no play in the distributor.

Re: Distributor Noise

what engine ?

Make sure the rotor is all the way down.
If its to high it will screw up the cap, sometimes they are tight and dont go on all the way.

Other than that , maybe the shaft isnt geting lubrication causing the noise.

may be its not even the distributor making the noise...

It's a 231 V6.

Rotor is tight down only 2 screws it sits real tight and flush.

It is definately coming from the dist. though, you can put your hand on the cap and feel the tap as well as hear it.

I heard/read somewhere about bearinggs in the dist. shaft possibly going bad?

Re: Distributor Noise

if everything went back the same when you did the tune up then it has to be the bearings.

I was thinking that earlier but wanted to be certain.

Probly pick up a used one cheap, I hav no idea right off what one would cost new.
