1997 speedo help

i have a 97 neon, the speedo just drops off to zero , and a good whack on the top of the dash seems to fix it. i know its a pinched or broken wire since i replaced the gauge pod with one form e-bay (same problem) there are two plugs with 10 wires each, the right one is the one im concerned with.
i have jacked the car up and ran it with the front wheels off the ground and touching the wiring harness seems to fix/cause my problem.
im just wondering if someone has the wire location or color that might help me narrow it down any further.
my next move would be to solder on a make shift harness to the gauge cluster with a 1 foot length of wire and trace all wires back and splice it in.
i really feel the problem is less than 6 inches from the actual plug, since it is "tight quarters" and ther are 2 very hard bends in the factory wire run
