engine computer
my car failed e-test the other day...my mechanic says it was because the computer is not engaging the egr valve, that the computer most likely needs to be replaced...this is not a problem for me as a nearby junkyard is soon having a $45 all you can grab weekend with approximately 30 lumina's at my disposal...so, can anyone tell me if there is a specific identification code on the ecm so I make sure I grab the right one...as well as where the heck the ecm is located on a 93 lumina euro 3.1 v6? thanx

Re: engine computer
First of all how do you know that is the problem, what failed, any codes? The ecm is under the hood rt side on the fender inner panel. The prom must be changed from yours to the new one, make sure the nunbers match on ecm case.

Re: engine computer
i agree with Max, how did he come up with his diagnosis? A much more common issue is the EGR solenoids fail, not a signal issue from the ECM. Find out what CEL trouble codes are present and post them here.

Re: engine computer
Replacing the ecm wouldn't be my first choice.
If your interested in GM ecm applications, here is a site. www.cruzers.com/~ludis When the site comes up click on the P4 link, scroll down the page, find your engine size and vin, go across the page to your year. Like the other person said, the ecm number should be on the ecm. I don't know how accurate the info is on that web-site, but it is interesting. |

Re: engine computer
ahh, thanx for the input...i just reposted this thread not thinking that it actually posted...the reason why the mechanic came up with this was because he replaced the egr three times before attemtping to dig deeper...after awhile he was in fact able to actuate the egr manually (im guessing between the computer and the valve itself) thats when he told me it's the computer itself not actuating the valve...in my honest opinion, this just doesnt seem safe, replacing the computer and all...is this a common practice? i've never done it before...
