blowing cold air

i have a 94 cutlass supreme..it blows cold air only..filled the radiator...also a loud whining noise under hood...could it be the water pump?...i just bought the car and am tryin to get it winter ready..need heat..thks...3.1 motor

First thing I would recommend is checking the thermostat, if it hasn't been done in a while. Does the car have a temp gauge? If it does, keep an eye on it and see if the car is getting up to operating temp. If you don't have a gauge, take the car out for a drive. Get it good and warmed up, and feel the upper radiator hose. The hose should be hot, and you should probably be able to feel the coolant running through it. If not, replace the thermostat.

Barring that, I would recommend is flushing out the heater core. If you look on the firewall on the passenger side, you'll see two rubber heater hoses. Disconnect the hoses (carefully, it's easy to damage the heater core if the hoses have been on there for a while,) take a garden hose, and flush the water through the core. First one tube, then the other.
