How to keep up performance
So I'm buying an eclipse 98 gsx and Ive really been wondering how I can keep up top performance if I need it mainly to drive around town. I dont have the money to really invest in anything more then this. So my question is how can I maintain excellent performance while using it for almost a town car? I'd like to take it up to the tracks but also show it off. Sorry, I basically am a newbie at all this stuff at the moment just looking for help and advice.

Re: How to keep up performance
Just keep up on regular maintainence and don't beat on it everyday. Thats the secret to it that nobody seems to ever follow too well. lol

Re: How to keep up performance
Well, I thought that would be most obvious thing to do, change oil etc... but other then that i figured that the parts would loose some power after a good amount of driving put on it but do you think that itll be enough to loose performance in it?

Re: How to keep up performance
Not really... I mean, naturally any motors performance will wear down with enough time. Thats just when its time for the motor to be freshened up. Its pretty much inevitable but you can extend the life of the performance just by doing the typical maintainence and driving it nicely like I said. Theres really not too much more than that you can do.

Re: How to keep up performance
You shouldnt loose performance as long as the fluids and filters and shit are changed regularly and its not beaten on much.

Re: How to keep up performance
alright, i was just checking b/c my friend said that it would wear on the engine if i did alot of driving, like a 5 miles back and fourth to places and normal driving, but i doubted him b/c its just a car. But also i want to be able to drive this around town without having to worry much about having to do an extremely high maintence. After i get it im sure im going to live on the forum lol.

A lot of people I have talked to with turbo DSM's like to change their plugs every oil change. There thats better. NGK BPR7ES spark plugs are the way to go. I would go with every other oil change with changing the plugs, and these things are cheap too. Yes they are copper, copper is the best way to go, they are also a stage colder.

How many miles are on it? Has the timing belt ever been replaced? If not, that would be a very good thing to start with to ensure a longer life out of your DSM. Also, the search feature on the site will help you out a lot, and read the FAQ.

Re: How to keep up performance
Check the timing belt. If that needs to be replaced, get the water pump, oil pump, belt, and the tensioners replaced. Also, if fuel filter hasn't been changed, do that too.
It would also be a good idea to run through a tank of engine cleaners. Lucas valve/engine cleaner works great. Cleans injectors and the head really well.
