Depends on how much you like the car.

$1,000 if you can drive it another year or two isn't bad.

I have right at 200,000 on my 99 Malibu and for me other then the Intake and pass lock plus a starter it hasn't been bad.

I will drive it until it drops. Buying a used car I might have more problems and I just don't need or want a new car.

Guess its a decision only you can Make.

IMO, it's better to fix the car. If thats all it needs, go ahead and do it. I would just try to make sure thats the only repairs it's going to need to keep the car safe and reliable. Ask your mechanic to give the car a quick once over before the work is done and ask there opinion. At some point, for me I just want the car to be safe and reliable.

My wife's got 160K+ on her 99 malibu (still getting 25/32 mpg with the 3.1L)and all I've done to it in seven years is replace the intake gaskets and water pump. With cheaper insurance, cheaper taxes and no car payment (assuming you own it) it's better to spend some on repairs than $350+ a month on new payments plus higher insurance and taxes. As long as those are the only problems, I'd do it.

I agree with them we have a '00 Malibu we use to run around in and go get parts in and things and it sure gets better mileage than the Blazer or pickup. Other than routine service and an alternator it has been worry free. My wife just went out and bought a '07 Pontiac G6 and I tell you I like the Malibu just as good as I do the G6 and the Malibu paid for. Sure I would put $800 bucks in it if I liked the car and didn't have the GREEN to spend on a new one or a used one that might need a lot more than $800 to fix.

If you buy a new car, you could lose more than that in the new car loan interest.

tractorboy has the right idea. If the car is in good condition otherwise, the $700-800 is basically the same as 2-3 payments on another vehicle. Good lucj finding a replacement for that little. The average retail on a '99 Malibu is about $5,100. Trade value is still at $2,500 in average condition. That $700-800 looking any better yet?

Well I have done a lot more than intake manifolds (about 3 times). Thank GOD I found the Trouble Shooter repair gasket. I have 185K and I would do it again. It takes me about 2 - 3 days to get er done.
