Re: 88 cherokee transmission issue
Please help I have a jeep 88 Cherokee Lardeo, and it has trouble shifting half the time it don't want to shift at the speed 35. And then when I get up in the 40s it like you have put the jeep in park and your hitting the gas peddle, and it won't stop til you pull over or if you take you foot off the gas peddle you can put the gear shift in Neutral and then put it back into drive and it shifts some times. But some times it don't. We have replaced the filter and the transmisson fluid but after we did that not even 10mins of driving it, it didn't want to shift at all. Last night it was fine again but the morning when I picked some one up it didn't want to shift again, so if anyone knows what the problem is please tell me!!! Hopefully, you put the right kind of trans fluid in it. The AW4 uses Dexron II or III, Mercon. Other fluid causes problems in shifting, etc..
(PS-I started a new thread for you.) |

Re: 88 cherokee transmission issue
Sorry...since no one else has responded yet...I think you should take it to an auto trans shop. With a 88..the seals are probably getting a little hard or maybe something has gotten loose in the valve body area. This is a problem that should be looked at by someone in person.

Re: 88 cherokee transmission issue
Another thing to check is the tps.Very common for it to cause shifting problems. On the older xjs it has a tps with 2 electrical connectors. One is for the trans computer and one is for the engine ecu.It is a little tricky to adjust and if it is a little out of adjustment it will cause problems.

Re: 88 cherokee transmission issue
I have the same vehicle. It would be going along and just seem like it would shift to neutral. I could shift to neutral while driving and back to drive and it would continue normally. Until one day it wouldn't go into gear at all.
I found that there is an electrical connector with several wires that connects to the transmission on the driver's side that gave me the problem. I unplugged it and squirted it with wd-40 and stuck it back on. I don't think it was making a good connection. It solved my problem, and that was two years ago. Still driving and shifting well. Not very scientific. But, I grew up on a large working farm. Wd-40 fixed a lot of things. PB-Blaster is good too!! |

Are you talking about the one on the left side on the tailshaft (2WD) or the left side of the transfercase? That is the speed sensor.

Re: 88 cherokee transmission issue
I believe you are right. It was on the transfer case. Nonetheless, it fixed the problem. Don't know why. Hope this helps.

Thanks...I don't know if Nascar is still reading this thread, but that would be something to look at.
The speed sensor sends the speed signal to the transmission control unit (applies to 88 MY) which does control shifting and Torque Converter lockup. |
