engine coolant temp sensor in olds 88

I am having a heck of a time trying to locate the engine coolant temp sensor. My fans aren't coming on, and I've checked the fan motors and relay already. Next in the chain woulg be the coolant temp sensor, but it isn't anywhere that I can find. Any thoughts?
It's a 1999 Olds 88 w/ 3.8L, FWD.

update

I replaced the engine coolant sensor that is right below the thermostat housing. The fans are still not coming on. Are there more coolant temp sensors?

how hot is the car getting?

Be assured that gm thought it would be a good idea to only let the fans go on when the temperature exceeds 212*. If the car does not get about 211 the fans will not turn on.

if there is a problem with the fans it could be:

COOLING FAN CONTROL MODULE
Part #: 009361735

as far as the coolant temp sensor, not 100% sure where it is on your L36 but on my motor it is on the back of the engine on the right side near the the throttle body, It is bolted to the lower intake manifold.

At first I thought it might be related to the coolant never being changed, and so I back-flushed it and put in new coolant. So far, its the same problem. I was planning on changing the thermostat next, but the gentlemen said that in his case it did not help.

I believe that the little manual that came with the car said that the thermostat should kick in at about 198 F. Is it true that the fans don't come on till 212? That really seems very hot.

Any other suggestions as what to try would be very appreciated.

Thanks,
Stan
