Clunking noise during hard braking?

My car is a 2002 Trans Am, just turned 58,000 miles. It's been 100% up until 7 days ago when a local dealer put new rear rotors and brakes on the vehicle. It developed a clunking noise when I brake hard. The noise isn't there during light braking, but gets rather loud when hitting the brakes hard from about 50-60mph. It stops fine, no grinding, etc. Just the clunking noise. I'm thinking they may have improperly installed something, but it will be a few more days before I can get it back there for them to check due to work schedules, etc. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Clunking noise during hard braking?

Welcome to AF!

I have no idea, but I can suggest this, don't drive it anymore until they fix it.
If you make it worse or the problem breaks something else, don't expect them to take responsibility for it....
...gotta love those factory trained AND CERTIFIED technicians! No one can screw up a simple break job until they get their certification... if it is an easy job that you can do yourself, then do it your self. You would have been better off paying a couple kids to do it, because if they don't know how to do something, then they would open up a book and follow the SIMPLE instructions...don't have that done at a dealer, EVER!!!

If you can, Id say buy a Haynes manual, and if you can, never take your car to the dealer ever again...

Im sorry, but Im a do it yourself kind-a-guy, mainly because I find it hard to trust others to do it right the first time...but in this case, they broke it, so let them fix it.

Re: Clunking noise during hard braking?

Definatley take it back ASAP, but do not tell them the bit about hard stopping from 50-60 MPH. Stops like that on fresh pads can glaze them and they will be instant garbage. You shouldn't be hard on your brakes for at least 150-200 miles after changing. Kinda like when your trans gets serviced.
