Thumbs down vtec not engaging

alright ive had the swap done for a while, just got the timing fixed and a new bearing in the passenger side. had the shop check to make sure the solenoid worked and they said it did it just wasnt getting power. my redline is kickin me at like 6.5-7k and i kno i should be around 8k before i get kicked. i bought an ecu jumper with vtec harness from rywire and im not gettin any ecu codes so im thinkin it could be the ecu i bought from them. its a chipped p06 that they said should work and i checked the wires and theyre all connected. anyone else have any problems like this and is there any other things i should troubleshoot.

Re: vtec not engaging

Check to make sure there is continuity between the wire running to the solonoid, and the ECU pinout. Also, there are other things that can affect vtec from engaging. Have you checked those as well?

Re: vtec not engaging

That Ecu sounds like a variable I would check out, but you say it running great..Id be suspect, just because someone "said" it would work, also check the wire, you could have checked the solenoid by simply putting 12v to it, itll click. But things that control vtec are temp, speed (your speedo works right?) oil pressure, ecu codes, and of course rpm. And hell, have you looked at the ecu? Ive seen the CEL bulb burn out and never knew it..

Re: vtec not engaging

could be a o2 sensor. that's what happened to mine. and a loss of pressure, ya know (head gasket, piston rings).
frodo could be right too. i've seen that's on some hatches before.

Re: vtec not engaging

my temp is fine..right at the quarter of the gauge as usual. oil pressure should be fine. speedo and rpm gauge both work fine. i kno im not throwin any codes cuz i have it wired to my check engine light so i can tell when im driving if anythings wrong. i bought the ecu jumper, vtec harness, and ecu from rywire so idk whats up with it.

hondacivic if it was the o2 sensor it would tell me on the ecu right? i havent gotten any flashes since i put the motor in so im thinkin this ecu just doesnt have vtec. im gonna go to the acura dealer here in a day or so with my buddy to pick up his prelude and ill see if theyll take a quick peek for me.

Re: vtec not engaging

The O2 sensor reading has zero effect on the vtec parameters.

Re: vtec not engaging

It sure as hell does, if it throws a CEL then it wont engage. however, if the o2 does not, then no, doesnt affect it at all.

Re: vtec not engaging

Just my .02 but you say the engine runs strong and everything seems right... no codes, temp is good, wires look right... But you say you're redlining at 6.5-7k rpms right? Maybe your tach is lazy... it's been known to happen. If you're running OBD1 try a known good p28 ECU. If you go to the dealership they're going to rape you just to scan the ECU.

Re: vtec not engaging

nah they wont my buddy gets his type r and his prelude serviced there and a guy who works there used to go to hs with us. he spends way too much money in there, the prelude is gettin a new synchro and they estimated 1800 to put it in!!! i told him to do it himself cuz he could get an engine swapped for that price but lucky for him hes pretty much rich after an accident settlement and hes always had them service his cars.

could i try his type r ecu in my car its from a 2000? its probly a different obd..maybe ill go down to the shop near me and see if i could borrow their ecu from their b16 crx for a few to test it.

borrowing somebody's ecu is the easiest way to tell if the ecu you have is garbage...the less easy way is to bust out a meter and start testing wires.
