I have a 1997 plymouth neon 5 speed. I was turning a corner the other night and my car died without warning. It will turn over but won't start. Also, the oil light is now on. I still have about 1,500 miles before my next oil change plus the oil level is good. Any ideas? Could it be the fuel pump? If so, is that difficult? Expensive to have done? Thanks, Kat

Re: fuel pump?
Could be fuel pump and if you have a little mechanical ability you can do it yourself (pump is in passenger side of fuel tank and you may need to lower tank a bit to get pump out). most pumps have a lock ring that you must turn off to take out fuel pump (a Haynes manual will be of great help here). I have not priced a fuel pump laely but I would guess they are in the $150.00 range. Another possibility is the Crankshaft Position Sensor, it failed on my '98 and she would crank but not fire. Try this, turn key to on and see if you hear the fuelvpump buzz at it pressurizes, if you can, the pump is working.

Re: fuel pump?
I just replaced the fuel pump in my 97 and I got it at Advance Auto.
If you dont have a plastic tank its $170 but if you do like me its $214. |

Re: fuel pump?
Another possibility to look into would br your timing belt. These also let go without warning and depending on your motor, after cranking it, you may have caused a world of hurt on your head(eg.bent valves in it and holes punched in your pistons). So if you do hear the pump working when you turn on the key, I would open the timing access cover at the top of the motor and watch the cam gear as someone else cranks it and go from there.

Re: fuel pump?
Oil light in a 97 doesn't mean time to change the oil. It's either low on oil or had oil pressure at the time.

Re: fuel pump?
I think your fuel pump seal in the tank bumbed out, I agree.
Best of luck. Can you remeber if your tank was low on fuel at the time. If it was check the above. Best of luck Wayne |
