I just aquired an 85 lincoln towncar that has not been driven or started for about 2 1/2 years. I could use advise on any procedures I should take before trying to get it running, such as fuel system cleaners, do I need to drain the gas tank.... etc. The car has a 5.0 tbi only 47,500 original miles, I know the people who owned it and it was serviced regulary until it was parked 2 years ago. Any advice is appreciated.

Hello
What I like to do in situations when something has sat for a while, is oil the cylinders down. Pull the spark plugs and spray some WD 40 down there. Chances are there is some rust on the cylinder walls. The oil will help clean up the walls as the pistons start to move. The WD 40 will also lube the cylinder walls too. I wouldn't worry about draining the gas tank unless it still has a lot of fuel left in it, just top it off with fresh gas. Once you get it running you will probally want to replace the fuel filter after a bit, since the fuel system will have some varnish and gunk in it from the old fuel. It wouldn't be a bad idea to replace the spark plugs and wires, after you get it running. Good luck geting her running again. Sounds like she has some low miles, should make a nice ride. Mike |

Re: 85 lincoln towncar
I agree with lz7xml about not needing to empty the fuel tank. This car has very few miles for being over 20 years old! Give the car a complete tune up (plugs, wires, air breather and fuel filters, PCV valve..etc) Add the gas treatment, get that car on the open road, and floor it! Doing so will clean its' fuel system out real good.

i would also recommend some carbon cleaner if there is any carbon build up within the engine. Seafoam is a product that does a fantastic job. I use it on my 95 town car with 186,000 miles on it and it really improves gas milage and keeps internal parts clean. i am not sure if an 85 town car is fuel injected or carborated so just read the instructions on the back of the bottle for your type. also, check your anti-freeze and make sure its not rusted out. you do not want to be blowing a head gasket.
