Unhappy Several warning lights (transmission dificulty)

My son drives a 1994 Rodeo that he just recently purchased from an individual. Last week he noticed the batery, and transmission lights along with a couple of others. The transmission then began to exhibit difficulty shifting. The voltmeter indicated just over 8 volts. I charged the battery and took it in for a charge test.

The test showed ~ 13.86 volts with the air, radio and lights on. It also indicated 68 amps under load. After one week with no problem, he called from work and said the voltage just dropped to barely over 12volts but otherwise running OK. I had him turn off the radio, and air. The voltage stayed the same.

He also stated the air was making an odd sound. I haven't heard it yet myself but will tonight. I am planning to take it for an other charge test while it it still running and hopefully before the symptoms disapear.

Any thoughts?

Jim

Re: Several warning lights (transmission dificulty)

It's likely a faulty or failing alternator rather than a battery problem. The transmission is going into 'limp mode' because it isn't getting the required voltage. The dash warning lights coming on are another common symptom of a faulty alternator. When replacing the alternator, purchase an OEM or Bosch unit. Most auto parts store units don't last and may be inadequate from the start.

Agreed, can almost guarantee a faulty or dying alternator; go for the best, which are not cheap, but you will regret it if you don't get a good one from the start. Don't delay this or the transmission will get worse, it's an all electronic transmission and requires the right voltage to shift correctly.

I'll third the alt. If you search, you'll find a multitude of posts. This is a classic on the Rodeo/Passport board.

Re: Several warning lights (transmission dificulty)

Thanks, the second test showed 30 amps with a load and when we took the alternater to get the replacement it bench tested 8 amps. Everything is fine now with the replacement.

I appreciate the help.

Curious to know which alternator you used...
