Thumbs up 2.4 swap help?

Hey guys,
My buddy up in PA just did a 2.4 swap from a stratus to his 97 dohc. He's swapped everything but the pcm. He says it cranks over, but sounds like it's out of timing, then stops. Will the pcm swap cure it, or is it something more obvious. Mechanically everything is lined up and installed correctly I would assume. Def. seems electrical/timing to me. Maybe someone wants to talk directly on the phone and give him a hand if you have any experience with this. Thanks in advance.

Re: 2.4 swap help?

The Cam position sensor is 90' out of phase in the 2.4 compared to the sensor in the 2.0 neon. I believe that the mark that trips the sensor is actually on the cam (the sensor is in the same spot).
I've heard that you can move the sensor, replace the cam or move the spark plug wires and injectors to the next cylinder to correct the problem 1-2 2-3 3-4 4-1. You can do an Internet search for some of the solutions people have used.

Re: 2.4 swap help?

Thanks bro, that's what it sounds like. He said it sounded like an old carb. car that had the distrib. 180* outa whack.

He does have the 2.4 head on with the 2.4 cams, so I bet that's it. So, he could either swap in his 2.0 cams(same specs I think), or swap the wires and injectors like you said. I will call him and let him know.

I'll post up the results...

Re: 2.4 swap help?

The 2.0 cams have less duration than the 2.4 cams do. I've heard that the 2.4 doesn't run very well with 2.0 stock cams.

Re: 2.4 swap help?

OK, update guys.

He rotated the cam sensor 90*, and it fired up. However, he said it appears to be only running on 2 cylinders...3/4. Any ideas?

1/2 are getting spark(and a bit warm to touch). He took the fuel rail off and he said it maybe looked like 1/2 weren't spraying as much? He's stumped for now...

Re: 2.4 swap help?

Ok, I will tell you from experiance that the absolute best way around this is to simply put everything back to stock on the 2.4 and switch out all computers. This is the quickest and most accurate way to fix the problem as opposed to rigging it all to shit.

Re: 2.4 swap help?

update:
He called howell automotive, and they said to put the cam sensor back as well. He said the ignition is 180* and told him to just flip the coil. It worked. It's just running a bit sluggish(slow throttle response). He said it does pull nicely though.

? about injectors. He has the factory 2.4 injectors in there, but Howell said 24lbs inj. are needed. Any thoughts?

Thanks

Re: 2.4 swap help?

The computer thinks that the engine is a 2.0 when it is a 2.4.
The stock injecters for the 2.0 and 2.4 are 20-21lb injecters.
So if you are using the 2.0 computer, you need to increase the injecters to 24lb units so the system will balance. It may run OK in the lower RPMs with the stock injectors but WOT at high RPM may cause the mixure to go lean as the injectors run out of capacity. WOT, high RPM, very lean mixture = no more engine, hole in piston, oil everywhere and a call for a tow truck.
Some of the slugish problems with the 2.4 are caused from the ignition timing. The 2.0 has higher compression and uses less timing than the 2.4. Some people have changed their computer to the MP or AF/X computer and solved the sluggish problem. You may want to ask Howell about that after you get your engine running as good as it will get on the stock computer.

When you change engines, you MUST change ECU'S! The engine goes with the computer.
