What should I pay for ... cap, rotor and wires?

Just curious ... my 96 k1500 silverado started missing the other day and the check engine lite went on and off. It was missing "hard". I had to take it to a shop ... too far from home. They took it for a drive ... and of course it ran just fine for them. Plus, there were no codes recorded. So now were chasing a ghost. His best advice is to change the cap, rotor and wires and see. Being over 120000 miles I agree.

But what should I pay for this, on a 96 silverado, 5.0 vortec?
Parts alone at the part store would run me about $100.00
His bill is gonna be close to $300.00
Am I gettin' the shaft here or is this a fair price?

Thanks.

I replaced plugs, cap/rotor at 100K. Wires at 135K. See my post on Plugs, recommended to use only GM P/N, no substitute and they were $5-6 each.

Ignition parts for the Vortec motors are expensive, you HAVE to use platnium or iridum plugs, special design on the cap, rotor and wires. I would change the wires at the same time. Also make sure that you use good name brand parts, A/C plugs expecially.

Re: What should I pay for ... cap, rotor and wires?

I got Bosch silicon wires from www.autopartswarehouse.com for $36 and free shipping with $50 order. APW P/N F1020-159281. Bosch life time warranty also.

I do not plan to keep the truck otherwise I would get a set of Magnacor racing wires I found for $95 for the Tahoe (9mm I think). www.magnecor.com
Extremely popular for Porsche 911. If oversized probably need to drill the wiring holder clips.
