misfuel

Hey guys!
I have a serious situation here. I accidentally mis-fueled my dads diesel Audio A6 with gasoline. Just a few liters, but now I don't know what to do! Help please!

Have the fuel tank drained just to be safe and refill with correct fuel.

Re: misfuel

Check your receipt for $/gal !

If it's just a little, I wouldn't have a problem putting alot more diesel in it.

3-liters is nothing, we had a dozer, that took 6-gallons of gas to start it's diesel engine.
Diesels, were design to run on all kinds of blended bio fuels.

Usually it's people putting diesel fuel into there petro cars.

Re: misfuel

I wouldn't mess with it, drain the tank. I imagine the A6 doesn't have that big of a tank and any percentage of gas that is over a few percent will damage a diesel I'd rather dump a 100$ worth of fuel than pay 4-5 figures for a new engine.

It's not the engine itself that is damaged by gasoline contamination, its the high pressure diesel injector pump and injectors.

Older, primitive diesels, like that dozer are relatively difficult to harm. But the newer auto diesel engines are VERY sensitive to a misfuel.

As noted above, have the tank drained and the fuel system flushed. Injector pumps and injectors are very expensive to fix.

Re: misfuel

The same thing happened to my girlfriend a few months ago... you should really drain the tank. That's what I did and I had no problems. And I also put a special misfuelling protection on so she won't make the same mistake again )
good luck

Re: misfuel

Isn't the diesel fuel nozzle bigger, and really don't fit into the unleaded spout on a petro car?

Re: misfuel

Diesel nozzle is bigger. The car is diesel and they put the smaller gasoline nozzle in by mistake.

Re: misfuel

ok, thanks guys! I drained the tank and it looks like I won't have any problems. What kind of misfuelling protection are you talking about? I guess I should really get one, although I'm pretty sure I won't make the same mistake again

Re: misfuel

BWM has just come out with a new fuel filler mechanism to prevent the smaller gasoline nozzle from opening the flap door in the filler neck opening, appearing on their X5 diesel model. As far as I know there is no retrofit product.

From what I've read, a few liters of gasoline shouldn't be much of a problem if you can dilute it with diesel as much as possible. You don't mention a model year, but tank capacities are between 70-80 L. So 3-5 L of gas in an 80-L tank may not even be noticeable. But it may run rough or give lower fuel economy until you can dilute it with more.

To prevent it from happening again, you'd be best to resort to visual cues such as a DIESEL FUEL ONLY label or paint the gas cap green...Audis have a little door to hide the filler cap. Good luck!

Re: misfuel

glad to hear that the car's ok
well, there are several protections I found on the web which are perfect for people who don't think while tanking Try not spamming this forum by having 2 accounts to promote your interests.
