My van won't start. When I spray starter gas, it will start. I suspect fuel pump. I removed and replaced fuel filter, same problem. I disconnected the hose from filter and turned over ignition no gas coming out. I suspect fuel pump from either gas tank or external pump. Does anybody know how to troubleshoot to see which pump it is or could it be something else? Please help. THanks

I believe that there is only a single in-tank pump in your van. Ford went to the single pump in '89 as I recall.

Before you take the tank down, you should see if you get voltage to the pump connector with everything connected. You can use a pin and "back probe" the connector carefully (do NOT pierce the wire insulation, but slip the pin under the "boot" on the connector). You must have battery voltage at the power wire for the pump, or even a new one will not work.

You should also be able to hear the pump run when you first turn on the ignition (assuming it does run). Get on the ground under the back of the van near the fuel tank and have someone (that you trust) turn the key to "on" but not "start". The pump should run for a few seconds to pressurize the fuel line. If it doesn't that's a problem.

Thank you very much. Now for your recomendation. I took out pump and hooked up to 12 volts and did not work. I did some banging and shaking and now it works. Should I replace old pump back or buy new pump?

If it were me, I would definitely replace it. If you've gone to all the trouble to remove it you're halfway there.

For what it's worth, a lot of people recommend using only a Ford replacement part or a Walbro brand pump. The no-name pumps from the local parts places are not as good (or so I'm told). The Walbro are capable of flowing more fuel as well.

if it has 2 tanks, it has a low pressure pum in each tank thar leads to the high pressure tank on rail under driver side.
