I was wondering what the freeze plug is for and how would I know if it is bad?

Re: Freeze Plug 95 Olds Cutlass Supreme 3.1L

A freeze plug is what it soulds like.
When its cold, and if your car doesnt hav enough antifreeze, then it freezes inside the motor. These plugs are supposed to pop out when freezing occurs, instead of cracking the engine.

Thier are several freeze plugs on the engine block and a couple on each head.
They do rust out and can leak.
I've even seen them not rusted, but yet letting coolant leak from them. Some of them are a PITA to get to if they need replaced.

Thanks for the info.
The reason I am asking is I believe that I have a blown head gasket, and I just wanted to know if the freeze plug could pop if the engine overheats bad enough.

I havnt ever seen one blow from over heating,
Unless they were really rusted out and on older motors.

I hav seen them old/rusted bad enough they just leaked constantly, whether the engine was running or not,
but the cars head gaskets were fine, no overheating issues anyway.
