New oil,Motor gone...?

Hi Everyone,
I'm not really asking anything this time. Just thought to tell you a story.
I've changed just about everything on this 97'. I drive fairly easy and keep up on oil changes and things.
Last month I changed to Mobil 1 oil instead of the Castro 10/30 I've been
using. Went to pass on highway, allthe way to 80 mph, and moter starts death rattle. This block only been car 2years and and had 27,000 when I got it. It's been running great except last year when intake had to change. Didn't get oil light or anything.
Maybe its true about not changing oil types.

Mick

Mick, do yourself and others here a favor, get that oil analyzed, to see what it contains. Some oil companies offer an analysis, free of charge. I am sure if you shared this information with Mobil, they would be glad to assist in helping you get to the bottom of this! A simple change to synthetic oil, would not cause this problem, there has to be another reason.

Re: New oil,Motor gone...?

if anything your engine was messed up prior to the switch and the sludge built up was the only thing holding her together...ok maybe not but i have never heard of someone switching to better oil and the engine died b/c of it. what was the oil level at when you pulled over after the problem?

This is what I understand, correct me if I'm wrong.

- You blew up a motor and had to change it. They told you the replacement had 27k on it-you had no maintenance history on it.
- You had to replace an intake manifold because your plastic intake leaked coolant internally into the lower manifold and EGR, possibly hydrolocked as a result causing excessive stress on internal components like connecting rods and bearings, and/or overheated.
- You stomped on the gas pedal to pass someone, more than likely, coming out of OD and tached out at 5500 rpm before OD kicked back in, and your used engine couldnt handle the stress.

If you're going to talk to an oil company about the quality of their product, make sure you dont share ANY OF THAT INFORMATION WITH THEM, because they will draw the same conclusion I just did. Tell them only that you change the oil every 3 months/3000 miles, and that you believe their product may have caused the difficulty. Drain the oil and save 2 quarts, and be very polite. and never EVER let them see you sweat.

In 20 years, I've never seen changing oils cause problems. only NOT CHANGING OIL causes problems. If the oil has the API approval, conventionals are all the same in my book. Not sold on synthetic or 7-12k LOF's.
