Renault RE20 sliding skirts?

Hey, how exactly did those "sliding sideskirts" work on the '80 Renault RE20 F1 car?

im not sure if we are talking about the same things but i know some old f1 cars had skirts that just slid across the ground. these were banned because they were considered unsafe though
