lumina remote starter
i recently got my dads old 92 chevrolet lumina. 4 door automatic 3.1L V6. (car not van). when he drove it the remote started worked fine but when he gave me the keys the battery in the remote was dead. i got a new battery for it and it seems to be working. whenever i push th estart button the small LED on the remote lights up. problem is the car will not start. when i press the button the car just flashes its lights and a clicking sound can be heard from somewhere around the ignition. the chime can also be heard inside as if the car is about to start but only a click comes out the the ignition. the car starts and runs fine with the keys.
im not sure of the modle of car starter but the make is something called "Carr-Tech". i searched this in google and found absolutly nothing. (try it if you want) so i dont know if the company even exists anymore. i dont even know if this came with the car because my dad bought it secound hand. my best guess is that the remote needs to be reprogramed but i have ne clue how and with no company website it is difficult to get support. any tips would help thanks. |

Re: lumina remote starter
If the lights flash, and the ignition turns on (seat belt chime sounds), the remote is probably working OK.
Try removing the closeout panel below the steering column, and look where the remote system is connected to the ignition switch harness. Find the relay that is connected to the heavy yellow wire. This is the starter wire. Look for a bad fuse on the remote system, or a bad relay or connection. |

Re: lumina remote starter
often times the hood safety pin switch gets broken or corroded, or the wire to it gets broken or shorted to ground somewhere. Take a look under your hood for this switch, it usually is mounted where when the hood is closed, it opens the contacts. You can first start by just unhooking it (should just be a single wire hookup), and tyying to remote start. If no luck, try measuring the continuity between the wire you just unhooked and ground. Just to make sure its not contacting ground anywhere.

Re: lumina remote starter
heres another interesting note: the starter has 4 buttons. 2 white, 1 blue and 1 yellow. the yellow one is to start the car, blue one is to stop it and the white ones are not labled. (im thinking keyless entry and truck pop though it does not have power locks) and all the buttons have the same effect right now. flash of the lights. chime and a click from around the ignition but no cranking or starting.
i looked under the hood to find the wire but there is no wire anywhere near the hood latch. (i think thats where i should be looking) so im currently taking apart the steering colum to see if i can find anything in there. Re: lumina remote starter
actually the hood pin safety switch could be mounted anywhere under the hood, and will look like this. http://gateway.canadiantire.ca/drive...5524441889439_

Re: lumina remote starter
i can not find anything like that under my hood. is it possible that my car deosent even have one? ive managed to find the unit and take a look at it. il get a pic in a sec. theres a long black wire comeing out the back that was not connected to anything so i thought it was a ground wire but now im pretty sure its the antenna. as well there is a green wire that goes no where but only wraps around the spark plug cable of the 3rd cylender. im thinking this must be the start sensor so it knows when to stop cranking. there is also an unmarked switch, and unmarked dial and a connector that had nothing connected to it. i looked around inside the dash and found nothing that connected to it so il guessing its probly for the power locks that my car doesent have. still no luck getting it working.
http://img528.imageshack.us/img528/1082/p1050004ur9.jpg EDIT: i found the hood sensor. it was a murcury switch that would compleat a circuit when the angle of the hood was right. rather then mess around with the murcury i just cut it off and connected the 2 wires but it has not fixed the problem . any more ideas?

Re: lumina remote starter
hey man, unhook the wires you snipped from the mercury switch. Usually it grounds or connects these two wires when the hood is open, and will not allow it to start. If ou have a mercury switch, chances are its doing its job just fine. I'd leave it alone.

c'mon man, easy on those of us with dial up connectios. I love helping on wiring issues, but i really hate sitting waiting for pictures to load for 20 minutes.

Re: lumina remote starter
and yes, they are relays. One only wonders why they were ever installed this way. Hopefully a professional didnt install that, if so, where was it done? My best guess of whats going on here is that an open contack of one of those relays contacted ground or something of that sorts happened and it zorched the brain box. If i were you, i'd just purchase a new remote starter and put it in. You have all the wires you need alread there. Having terminals exposed like that is a safty threat, and an electrical problem waiting to happen. At the very least when you get it working, if you do, wrap all the exposed wires in layer upon layer of electrical tape.
