Re: dodge tranny Q

Dodge automatics suck. The sticks are unbreakable though.

My automatic truck is still holding out. I'll put a performance trans in it once it begins to act up though.

Re: dodge tranny Q

When i had my 99 only problem i ever encountered with the tranny was a break in one of the lines. Other than that no problems.

Re: dodge tranny Q

all the dodges suffer from bad torque converters and bad direct drum inner seals.

Dodge truck automatics have undersize valve bodies but afternarket sources can fix this.

I am currently looking for a replacement for mine since I put a new motor in and don't want to trust the tranny with 140K behind it.

If you are going to thrash it, get the tranny work done early and save a tow or worse.

The valve body is responsible for path and pressure of ALL transmission functions, so it stands to reason that an undersized valve body is not as capable of doing the job as well or as efficiently.

"OIL CIRCUITS
Fluid flow in an automatic transmission is routed through passages and bores. Although many of these are located in the case and pump housing, most will be found in a master flow control called the valve body. Fluid flow through these passages and bores is controlled either by a valve or a series of valves working in combination. With the exception of two valves, each of the control valves will operate automatically to direct the fluid as necessary to perform a certain function.

If a particular hydraulic function is defined, such as the 1-2 shift, we can trace the fluid flow through passages, bores and valves to the components that make the actual shift from first to second. What we have traced is referred to as an oil circuit. The automatic transmission has a circuit for each function. In fact, the pressure regulation valve we examined earlier in the program is an oil circuit with the function of controlling pump pressure.

When you study an oil circuit, you are looking at a schematic that shows exactly the fluid path and valves necessary to perform a specific function."

The first thing which comes to mind in response to your questions is...poor or no shifting at all.

Try running an automatic transmission without a valve body.

Easiest way to find out would be to read the OBD II codes with a scanner. You can pick one up for $40 or $50 on EBay. Do a search for ODB II scanner or reader. They come with a book that will tell you what the codes mean and there are also good websites with additional codes.

Chances are you have a check ball or spring that is not right. A good shop doing a tranny fluid and filter change might find it and will fix it if they do.

Another option is to do the fluid and filter yourself but be careful, there will be a handfull of balls and springs that you will need to get back in the right places. A trouble shooting and repair manual is only $25 to $30 and it can tell you what to look for.

This site is specifically for my book but they have others, just check around and find the book for your tranny.

Hope this helps!
