???Adjusting lifters on 351 W

I just started hearing a slight lifter knock coming from the passenger side of the motor. I need to get it adjusted but don't have them money right now. Any idea on a way to adjust them. I have talked to a few people and they said that if you take yoru valve covers off, then start yoru engine and loosen the lifter to where you will hear it knock, then tighten it to where it stops knocking and turn it 3/4 of a turn more. Anyone ever heard of this, or have any idea how to adjust this. Thanks

Re: ???Adjusting lifters on 351 W

Your friends have described the adjustment procedure that is typical of a small block Chevy.

Unfortunately, your 351 does not have an adjustible valve train (unless its been modified from stock) The rocker pedestals screw down to a fixed height and relies on the hudraulic lifter to take up the slack. If the head has been shaved, block decked or some procedure that would affect adjustment, a longer or shorter pushrod is used.

I believe there are adjustible pushrods and conversion kits (to an adjustible valvetrain) available, but I have never used them.

IMO you should check it out and look for a collapsed/sticking lifter or some kind of damage such as loose/worn/broken cam lobe, lifter, pushrod, rocker arm, pedestal and bolt, and valve.

If your engine was recently rebuilt, as it says in your sig, then there may be a problem with the new valvetrain parts and/or assembly that has contributed to an early failure. Perhaps you should take the matter up with the engine builder before you take it apart.
