1992 oldsmobile cutlass supreme stalling

Hi, I have a 1992 olds cutlass that is having major stalling problems. When I initially start the car, it idles very high, sometimes it will eventually idle normal but then it stalls. When i am driving down the road, it jerks back and will sometimes stall while driving, it will imediately start again. It is getting worse everyday and I am scared as it always seems to stall when i am at a set of lights or in the turning lane. I have used injector cleaner twice now but it seems to be getting worst. The Cat Converter rattles and when I am having the stalling problems it smells like rotten eggs. I just purchased the car for $700 and it ran excellent untill now (3months). It is in pretty much mint condition and when it was running good, it was idleing very smooth except for the noisey Cat Converter. Any suggestions or fixes would be greatly appreciated

Welcome to AF!

If the cat is broken up it could be blocking the exhaust and causing the car to stall while driving but I doubt that is the issue. If the cat needs changed you can purchase a new one for less than $100 (US) much cheaper than an oem one.

To correct the stalling issue change the Crank position sensor. This is the most common cause of stalling issues on today's cars.

hey gtp dad u helped me before nice to see you helping out new members. im not sure how good a used one is but i went down to a scrap yard that lets u take the pieces off yourself and i got the dual exhaust from the manifold connection back in good condition for $50 canadian also i was told a few times now that these cars were built with defective fuel injectors, something wrong with their electrical, and this has caused alot of stalling problems for many people. the problem with these cars i find is that too many problems can make it stall. off the top of my head plugs, wires, vacuum hoses, loose connections, cps, tcc, ttc, fuel injectors, catylytic (now i learned), oil pessure sensor, o2 sensor, fuel filter, fuel pump, blown gaskets, bad ecm, bad ignition coils and module....i think thats most of them anybody got n e more?

Re: 1992 oldsmobile cutlass supreme stalling

A related question albeit on a 1993 Cutlass Ciera. When the car is cold it runs well. When the vehicle has reached nor,mal operating temp it stalls. The problem started after changing intake gaskets that developed a leak, and replacing a missing screw to hold the throttle body. The idle speed seems to drop off afte normal operating temp is reached. I have replaced the fuel filter, fuel pump and isolated the torque converter lock up solenoid. The car does need an exhaust system replacement and converter eliminated. What could be causing the stalling problem

Check your fuel pressure when hot. Could be a bad fuel pressure regulator. Also stalling can be a sign of a bad crank position sensor especially if it restarts easily. Both items can cause stalling when an engine is hot.

Also please don't pull up old threads. Start a new one as it will probably get a much better response and not clog the forum with older threads.

went through all kinds of stuff with ours to find out eventually that a bad plug wire was throwing everything else out of whack!

Re: 1992 oldsmobile cutlass supreme stalling

I have a 1992 Olds Ceria brought for 500 with 90,000 original mi. Car was running good for 3mos. Now when I drive down the highway the car shuts off. I still have power but it seems like I lossed gas. I replaced the water pump but need to replace the Thermostat but cannot locate the housing for the thermostat. Its not like the cutlass supreme. I also thought it could be the fuel pump. Does anyone have any ideas?

Check for fuel pressure by using a fuel pressure gauge. You could have a leaking fuel injectors. Leaking fuel pressure regulator diagphragm which can be seen by removing the vacuum hose attached from the fuel pressure regulator and see if there is any traces of fuel.

It could be a loose vacuum hose. I have stalling problem due to loose vacuum hose which is located above the throttle body and I rigged up something to hold it tight. I have some vacuum hose that was laying on top a high temp pipe and it burned through the vacuum hose but the way it burned through is that the high temp pipe was somewhat sealing it as it burned the vacuum hose on the shape of the high temp pipe. I moved the vacuum hose and cut it half and put some vacuum connector and clamps and it works.
