Thermostat location on a 1999 Grand Am L4 engine (Newbie Question)
Hello everyone! This is my first post and surely won't be my last! I am helping a friend from work replacing the thermostat on his 1999 Grand Am with the L4 2.4 engine. I have already done a post search and several google searches (that's how I found this forum) with very little luck. It seams that all the info I can find is on the larger V-6 engine. My question is where exactly is it located and are there any tips on replacing it. Also. someone has mixed regular coolant with the dex-cool. What is involved in flushing the coolant system. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Re: Thermostat location on a 1999 Grand Am L4 engine (Newbie Question)
Welcome to AF!
You need to get the system flushed as soon as possible since the two coolants are not compatable. I suggest Prestone Extended Life once you flush the system. It doesn't have the bad properties of dex and lasts longer than the green stuff. The thermostat on the 2.4 is located behind the engine near the back of the block. It is a bear to get to. One tip to replacing it is to take it to a mechanic with a lift. Easier to get to that way although it will cost you some money it will be worth it just for the hastle factor. If you decide to do it yourself you will need to get it up far enough to get to the back of the engine. Good Luck!! |

Before I got a lift, I used to use ramps.
The only problem with that, was the passengers tire was kinda in the way

Re: Thermostat location on a 1999 Grand Am L4 engine (Newbie Question)
Thank you for the info! Fortunately I have access to a lift so I should be able to get the job done! I'm a Ford man (I know that is probably a swear word on this forum) and don't know much about GM products. Thanks again!

Re: Thermostat location on a 1999 Grand Am L4 engine (Newbie Question)
Changed the t-stat tonight, took less than a hour and a half. Found that if you use a 1/4" ratchet and a long extension through the manifold opening the bolt closest to the block was easily removed and installed. The other bolt was accessed from inder the car. No overheating now!
Thanks again for the advice! Doug
