Tranny help lost in the country!!

Hello

I have stranges problems with my transmission TS 3800 ( 4 T60 E rebuild one with now 24000 kms) Everithing was fine and suddenly the gear box refused to shift to 3rd and 4 th.
4000 rounds/mins and 90 kms/h !!!, I released the accelerator pedal it goes on 4th for a second and suddenly the engine seems to stops and make the speed goes down(like an engine brake) with impossibility to accelerate, when I put the speed selector on N the engine goes to normal speed .
The oil smell a little burnt. worn clutches???

It is difficult to describe exactly because I prefer to stop before destroying all!

Thank you for your help

PAul

Re: Any codes?

Paul,
Are you able to pull out the diagnostic codes? They will be of good help.

regards Niklas

Re: Tranny help lost in the country!!

To me..this is just speculation.. it sounds like the 1/2 band applies when it should not. In Drive or OD, just the input band applies then the clutches pile up one after the other up to 4th gear. Having the 1/2 band applied in 1st or 2nd is OK , but it is in conflict if it keeps applied when 3rd and 4th clutches apply.
(1/2 band does not apply when on D or OD, and this is why there is no engine braking when transmission downshifts to 2 or 1 , while there is engine braking when transmission lever is in position 1 or 2 because this band is applied)
HOw far is the car from Paris? I suppose then that returning home in 2nd gear using "nationales" or rather "départementales" would pose no problem....that is, with the lever in position 2: in this position, 1/2 band is forced to apply, which would make the situation normal, and it will prevent 3rd and 4th from trying to apply, preventing the conflict. ONce home, you will be more at hand to investigate.
this is an opinion only...but caught with this problem, I'd try it that way.

Re: Tranny help lost in the country!!

thank you for your reply

I had many different codes
15 / 21 / 31 /41 / 66 and I disconnect the battery and try to run again
and get just 21 Cam shaft I presume.I change it last year.
I read that on an old 2005 post from you about transmission"COdes 21 and 22 DO inhibit 4th, tcc and cruise."

I am at 400 kms from Paris do you think it is possible to ride such a distance on level 2.?

I eared about overhall kits not too much expansive , is it a hard job to repair a transmission ?(hundred of parts).
Is it possible that the throttle body is dead and transmit bad informations to the engine and transmission.

Thank you for your help

Paul

Re: Tranny help lost in the country!!

400km in 2nd is indeed annoying....I think transmission codes are not available by flashing the CEL....they require a scanner, but on OBD1 there are not a lot of codes available there....
I would just hope the problem is external....and indeed you do have a lot of codes but dating from when???. code 21 (TPS) inhibits 4th and TCC and cruise, but not 3rd...and would not cause the weird symptoms you have described.
Obviously you have more hands on experience with this transmission than myself...I remember you had bought that transmisison from America and installed all of it by yourself...but if active devices like clutches and bands are not damaged, control devices are mostly accessible from the outside, either under or driver side...c.v. shaft needs be removed though.
All in all, I wait to know more from you about what actually went wrong.

Re: Tranny help lost in the country!!

I'm back in Paris by train for a few days and I left the Pontiac at the house in the country.
I think I'm going to bring back the old transmission to the country to improve and disassemble easily the side panel and see what to do. But what to do ? I have lost my CD ROM with all the explaintions!!
What can I test behind the side panel TCC and what else?
Thank you for your reply

Paul
