Mercedes G-class

Somone at Mercedes better fix this. In google the top search hit for "G-class" turns up this unfortunate episode. (gotta love this quote)

"Please be aware that driving on graded dirt roads can be very dangerous. Traction and directional stability are marginal on dirt - even in 4WD. The gravel under the tires act like small ball bearings."

No terrain will ever be too rough for this most competent 4WD.

Braking harder increased the fishtailing and when the vehicle got sideways far enough it rolled over. In fact, I made 3 1/4 rolls. :hehehe:

Please be aware that driving on dirt roads when you are a lawyer and on your celphone at excessive speeds in your G-Wagen is dumb. Then bitch about the fact that the safety cage took absolutely no damage and you are then able to post photos about your stupidity on the internet.

I somehow doubt this stupid dork actually did 3 flips. that thing would be toast, or the G Wagen is a fricking tank.

the local muffler pro shop did a G class the other day. it was straight from the dealership and they ripped everything out and put in dual flowmasters and spared no expense. I think the price on it was 115,000

I'd take an ARB etc loaded Toyota Land Cruiser over a G-class.
The custom Toyotas can run over $100,000.00 in Australia. Diesel, lockers, etc, etc, etc mmmmmm:licker:

I wouldn't. Mercedes G-Class - solid axles front and rear, lockers front, rear AND center. Electronic traction control, electronic stability control, That's all standard.

The G-Class is a military grade vehicle.

So is a hummer and I used to pass them in the bayous down south wedged between trees that my "cheap" GM pickup had no problems with.......

Ive see too many Land Cruisers roll out of the outback in fine shape to discount them. Im not talking gnarly wheelin' all the time (not that they cant do it). Im talking about a rugged rig that can take all nature can dish up and then more. The G-class is a sweet ride and well known (hell - Arnold Schwarznegger has one) but it doesnt have the LandCruiser's resume.

Maybe a Unamog??

Arnold may have one, but he's being eclipsed by all the bling-bling rap artists that think they're just the image they gotta front...

Yes, but the Hummer is NOT solid axle front or rear. Independent suspension all around.

There's a dealer near where I work that has a used hummer. The dorks drove it up on an old Eclipse. Well...the rear wheel was sitting there hanging in the air. I wanted to stop by and say, "gee...that's some crappy articulation you got in that $80,000 vehicle."

Uh, yeah but like I said - It doesnt have the resume.. Old Ford pickups have the solid fronts etc and they suck off road unless you mod them out. There's a lot more to a good all-rounder than solid axles.
I think the emphasis in the US is on recreational & some military wheeling so there is this emphasis on certain pieces of a 4X4 rather than whole rig. I take a look at the 4X4's that are on active, heavy duty around the world and pick from that mob. The G-class is nice but it aint no old-school Unamog and as far as I know it isnt a vehicle that has been commonly seen coming out of the African desert after months of hard duty.

Personally my first pref is for a well-optioned Diesel Land Cruiser (not in the US) or a Nissan Patrol (again, not in the US).

OZXTERRA, The Gwagen is a serious vehicle. Just because they don't "Come out of the outback" all covered in Kangaroo guts, doesn't mean they aren't worthy vehicles. These are built by Germans, not the guys who brought you the X5, but the guys who brought you the Unimog. They have been making military vehicles since before world war 2. The G wagon is a military vehicle that has made it's way into our Driveways. Just like the hummer, unimog, Jeep, Defender, etc. It's made to take abuse. But it's also made byu Mercedes. They don't skimp, cut corners and such. They also have a certain prestige in the US. They would have a weird market if it were a stripped down diesel 4 wheeler. Their market is upscale, bling a bling bling, lawyers and crap. There will be Land Roveresque schools to teach these celphone welded to their head pavement pounders how to actually use the vehicle offroad. Maybe they'll total a few, the parts will sadly be worth more than the whole... so I doubt I will be owning one any time soon.

It's a capable wheeler, and will hold it's own with the best of the best in stock form (VS the others in stock form)

No kidding its a serious vehicle.. I never disputed that. All I said is the MY preference is for a Land Cruiser.... (sigh). I dont give a crap if aliens built it (or Germans), that doesnt make it perfect. The Euro-cars Ive owned were damn nice but that doesnt mean I get down and worship them. When I look at a rig I look at its reputation. The Unamog and older generations etc have that. The swanky new G-class does not (yet). IN MY OPINION (just to make that clear this time), I dont think its worth the money even if it is bloody german-made, compared to something else like a Land Cruiser.
Dont cut corners?? Ive got news for you sunshine, every auto-manufacturer cuts every corner they can. The ones they dont cut - they make you pay for... and you can get them "uncut" cheaper with rigs such as those Toyota make.
Read the Merc reviews as of late - sure they are still awesome machines but there are more and more reports or "cheap" this, and "lacking the old snick-snack feel "that. Those are reviews from people who actually owned these things, not XTerra owners.
Are you sure its the Unimog guys? Or is it now the Jeep Liberty guys?

Another thing, you dont roll out with Kangaroo guts on a rig - generally they jump and you end up wearing one through the windshield.
