Help, bumper, serial number?

Hey,

I was recently hit by a drunk driver. He then drove away. And my insurance only covers the other guy if I'm in an accident. But part of his bumper was left in my car door. And that part have a number in it. So I was wondering if I could track down his car by that number?

Thanks,
Luke

Re: Help, bumper, serial number?

Unfortunalty its very unlikely, most numbers on car parts are only part numbers, not serial numbers.
You could find out what year and model of car it was, and thats about it.

Re: Help, bumper, serial number?

your best bet would be to take the bumper to your local dealer parts counters. They will be more intimate with the parts that they deal with, and assuming you find someone knowledgable, they can at the very least tell you if the brand of the vehicle is theirs or not, and if it is, they might be able to hunt down the model.

Keep in mind, that the serial numbers on parts a lot of times is NOT the "part number", but is instead a manufacturing number that has nothing to do with the part number. This is why I advice going to the dealers. Although they may not be able to help you either, they are much more likely to have number cross references for whatever number you have on the bumper.

another option, which I would save for last, would be autobody shops. They deal with body panels and bumpers a lot, and would be somewhat intimate with such components.....but I would think the dealers would be the better resource here.
