95 Camaro Theft Deterent System Problem
Hey folks new here, I recently purchased a 1995 Camaro for my sons first car (lucky him). It is a 3.4 V6 model, standard shift. The price was right because it came with a problem. The vehicle won't start. The previous owner said that a mechanic looked at it and said there was a problem with the theft deterent system not allowing the car to start. It had just come from getting new tires put on and when it was parked it wouldn't restart. I saw some stuff on this site about how to by pass this for remote starters which seems simple; however I desire to keep using the key. Question is how do I get around this or how do I trouble shoot/repair this?

Does this car have a aftermarket alarm or are we talking about vats here?. Cause vats is easy enough to bypass. Will cost you all of maybe 50 cents in parts.

Re: 95 Camaro Theft Deterent System Problem
Take the key to any GM dealership and they will tell you the number/resistance of the key. Whatever you do, DO NOT BUY A VATS KEY FROM A DEALERSHIP. They will rip you a new one. Take the value they give you and order a blank vats with that value off of ebay for like 6 bucks shipped and then get it cut at any locksmith for 2 -3 bucks. Its much better than the 35 - 65 the dealers charge.

If you take your title and your key they will be able to tell you if the resistance is correct.

Re: 95 Camaro Theft Deterent System Problem
Well guys this was the outcome, the battery was dead so I had to hook up the battery from my car and everything came on like the car was going to start... However no start, no attempt to turn over even. All I had was the binking security light. When I measured the resistance of the key I came up with 1.8K Ohms which was in specs with a chart I found which would make it a number 7 key. What is my next step? I think, and you can tell me if I am correct, is to check the two wires coming from the ignition. Put the key in the ignition and turn to start, cut the wires and measure the resistance of the circuit with the key in place. If the resistance is way off from what the key is the ignition is bad. Do they sell these resistors at the part stores or is this a dealer item? Thnaks for all the help guys this my first Chevy I have worked on from this age. Usually is one of my buddies and its the older stuff. We are taking my buddies Malibu with the 396 to the track tomorrow to see how it does!! Let me know you guys are great!!
