'92 Cutlass brake problem

Hey everyone,

This is my first post and I have a question. It seems like forums like these are a great place to find good information from people who know, so any help will always be appreciated.

Anyhow, my folks have a '92 Cutlass Supreme 3.1 and the brakes are just terrible. When I've driven it you have to stomp on the brakes to get it to stop quickly. A lot of pressure is required in everyday driving. My folks spoke with an olds mechanic and their mechanic who both said that's just how the brakes are for this year and model.
Anyone heard of this? Is there any solutions?
Thanks, Jesse

Welcome to AF!!

I disagree with your mechanic! This is not normal for any braking system. First of all you need to have the brakes checked. It sounds like you have either a problem with the master cylinder or the power brake booster. You may also need to have the brake fluid replaced due to low boiling point.

Also take a careful look at the rear disc brakes, the calipers and slides are famous and infamous!! for seizing up causing the front brakes to do all the work, jack 'er up, step on the brakes and see if the rears lock up, carefully of course.

Re: '92 Cutlass brake problem

Thanks for the welcome!

I'll get with my dad on these topics. I believe he had the brakes done recently so I don't know if a bad master cylinder would be apparent when this is done(I've done little work on cars). I'l start looking into these and keep you posted...thanks for the help!!

Re: '92 Cutlass brake problem

I have a 92 olds supreme.
the brakes do take more pressure than 'a normal newer car' to stop. Thank GM for crappy 10.5" rotors system.
I do get a little brake fade sometime on hard stops.
But what you say seems extreme.
I had this happen to me it was the rear calipers siezed up (YES BOTH!! Thank GM again for poor caliper design!). I'd start there and make sure there not siezed. If there ok then check the mastercylinder/booster.
I got rid of the problem entirely by upgrading to a 94+ rear rotor and caliper.
(11" rotor & pads way easier to change).
The car stops much better now. Gonna do the front upgrade to 11" this week I hope.

Hope this helps
