My accord is possessed! Electrical and Thermo probs.

Car: 1995 Accord EX-v6 115K miles
First signs of crazyness was when I was parked and listining to my alpine CD player w/ engine off. The player turned off then back on again so I thought it's probably a connection problem.
Anywho, I was driving in the streets and this electrical burning smell with no smoke came from the car. I quickly stopped the car and popped the hood -I found nothing. Turn the car on and the temperature went straight up, and my speedo and tachometer were goin nuts. I check the engine fans, they came on and went off like they usually do (it's around 80 degrees in NY). I check the fan and realy fuse they are ok. I turn the car on and everything is fine like nothing happened. Today (4 days later), while im driving in the streets my radio went off and on, the speedo and tachometer went nuts a little and back to normal, however, my temperature would go up to 75% from 50% and the wierd thing is it would go back to normal when I turn the low beams on.
I have the haynes manual but I can't trouble shoot this weird crap.
My car temp never goes above the 50% mark and the fans werk fine I believe.
If it's a bad thermostat can it screw other stuff up?
Really Appreciate any help.

Re: My accord is possessed! Electrical and Thermo probs.

Well thermostats are cheap to replace, so you may want to go ahead and do it, if you havn't for quite some time. However, I seriously doubt it has anything to do with the electrical issues.

A burning smell, sounds like burnt wiring/fried electronics. Plus that could account for all kinds of odd things happening on your dash. Say for instance, a capacitator leaked on an electrical board, like your ECU or something, that would produce a burning smell, maybe even a bit of smoke, and could cause multiple various issues as you described.

Unfortunantly, I really can't give you anything definitive. I'd check the Haynes manual, and see if you can find common wiring/electronics between these things, perhaps some wiring behind hte dash, and check it out. See if something got burnt/shorted out.

Your 1996 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 is the 92nd out of the 315 that were made that year. Only 21 of which are exactly identical.

Re: My accord is possessed! Electrical and Thermo probs.

Well my car almost stalled today while accellerating from stop.
Haynes manual says it might be the ignition timing but it doesn't explain the other things.
I guess it's time for a tune-up.
