Wind Sheild scratches

What products / techniques work best for removing scratches on windows?

I've achieved perfectly good results with 1500 grade wet and dry then a rub with Auto Glym polish then a coat of Johnson Klear (or Future as its known elsewhere).

I use a nail buffer which is ~12,000 grit. I've heard toothpaste will work, too.
