1999 Astro LS wet carpet

I've owned this 1999 Astro LS for a few years and within the last year the carpet has been getting wet behind the front seats. It happens in winter and summer and whether it is raining or dry. The carpet gets wet from underneath; there is no visible water leaks from outside. QUESTION - where is it coming from and how do I stop it? Any help??

Jeffy,

I am having a very similar problem with my 2000 Astro LS. My carpet is also very wet underneath from just behind the front seats to the back. My original suspicion was the dutch doors, however, I can't pin it down. I am pretty sure it is not the rear A/C condensation. Anybody out there....Please help Jeffy and I find out what is causing these leaks. I probably have multiple gallons of water under my carpet!

I have a 99 astro cargo and have witnessed the dutch doors leak. travel all the way to the front of the van. And my padded vynil floor is wet at the bottom. If you dont believe me, park your van up hill the next time it rains and see how wet the carpet gets.

Re: 1999 Astro LS wet carpet

Had same problem on '91 bought used in Feb. '04. All rear padding soaked. Took it out and put down 1/2 inch plywood and new rear door gaskets--Big bucks! Discovered rear air not draining-felt like big dumbie. All dry now. '91 model has flow-thro vent which means a/c compressor always on except when heater or vent selected. Of course compressor was wore out and had to be replaced. Make sure a/c is draining!

Hi -
I had soaked carpets on a '95. The high mounted stop lamp leaked into the rr molding. I put RTV under it and that stopped the leak.
Good luck,
Mike P

I have a 1999 with same problem. If you go to the driverside rear right of vehicle and look under the car. You will see the rear ac pipe. Follow that pipe up to where it hits the a/c block. You will feel a ruber surrounding the block. Squeeze this rubber until water starts to leak out (do not put your head down their because you will get wet). The problem is caused by dirt getting into the rear drain. When it gets plugged up the water spills out onto your carpet. This fix only works on vehicles with rear ac.

"If you go to the driverside rear right of vehicle and look under the car. " Is that the back left corner of the car?

Yes. If you go to the driverside rear of th van that is where the rear air condition unit is. put on an old shirt and some gogles or safty glasses if you have some. when you look under the quarter panel you will see an aluminum pipe comming from the ac unit and if you follow this pipe with your hand you will feel a rubber seal, I think it is square, all you have to do is squeeze it with your fingers and a bunch of dirty water will stream out from it. Squeaze it untill no more water comes out. You may have to do this again after you start using the air conditoner on a regular basis. The way to see if it is plugged up again is after you use the rear ac for a while and you pull into a parking space or driveway just look at the rear driverside and see if you see a puddle of water. If you don't then you need to put your hand up under the driverside rear quarter panel and squeeze the rubber seal until water starts dripping out again. The reason that the rear ac drain gets pluggud up is from road dirt and stuff plus it was put in a bad place.

Re: 1999 Astro LS wet carpet

the water comes into the van through the back doors. A guy at the junkyard that installs winshields told me. The reason why is because the sealer that is supposed to go all around the back (the square) doesn't go all the way to the bottom. In order to fix it, remove the molding (the bottom one), my dad used syllicone all around (especially on the bottom part) and placed the molding back on and sealed the molding all around with more syllicone. Since then, the problem has been fixed and even neighbors astros have been fixed this way.

I'm glad that I was able to help you correct the problem. If we all stick together and help each other it's one less victim for the dealer!
