Finished: Ford Taurus SHO

Finished one

AMT kit, Reissued as a 'robocop' car, Awesome kit, except the headlights (molded in chrome, no lense). It's painted Silver Frost, OEM ford color, mainly used on Contours. With a graphite trunk/hood.. I made this after a SHO I saw on the interent (pic at the bottom).

The rims are out of the RSX kit, They kind of look like superleggras. I painted them with testors metalizer. The window trim is not perfect, but it was very hard as the 'lines' of the window trim are nearly non-exsitant, I did my best. The motor is mostly stock with the exception of custom headers and a CAI leading into the fenderwell.

This is easily my best build, IMO anyways. The pic's kind of suck since it's inside, I'll get outside pictures tomarrow.

And here's the SHO I was trying to build it after, As you can see I had to comprimise on some things ( I added the lip, before i realised this one didn't have one, I also painted it white before, Duplicolor white has TERRIBLE coverage so filled up the panel lines with paint and it looked like crap, so i stripped it.) and another thing the body on this SHO is a SHO Plus, instead of a regular SHO.

Re: Finished: Ford Taurus SHO

Neat model; I used to own a '90 SHO (from '91-94), most wonderful engine in the world wrapped in the shittiest engineering possible

My friends at work called mine an SHI

I plan to build a kit similarly as a mild tuner some day; the real car sux big time stock but w/proper tweaks to stiffen the body/suspension and upgrade the brakes/clutch/exhaust/intake and rolling stock the rest of the car matches the perfection of the Yamaha motor that revs like it's a rotary and never blows up.

I have yet to finish my '91 SHO model that I modified into a '93, w/the revised interior/body. That one may actually end up mildly tuned/slammed w/better rims. Any of the 17's from Revell's tuner series fit the SHO model pretty well.

Maybe you got a lemon?

One of my dad's friends has one with over 180k on it and it runs like a champ, no body rust, and nothing wrong suspesnion/chassis involved. I'm looking for a 1:1 SHO now, always wanted one.

Re: Finished: Ford Taurus SHO

This is beautiful. I love it. Didn't realize that this is the Robocop car. I have seen some around in my LHS on clearance. May be I should pick one up!

Mine was absolutely a lemon, and I knew several people that had great service from their SHO's and put a lot of miles on them. It's a lot different when it's a new car and the factory/dealer support is so bad that the car has a looooong list of problems every time it frequently visits the service bay. I was so ready to let that car go when it got to the point I could get my down payment back on a trade-in; I certainly wouldn't/couldn't sell it to anyone I knew. I was active in the SHO Registry/Peachtree Chapter, the national club was started locally by Bill Staib and we had the SHO convention here in Atlanta in '93 that was a very big event. Someone showed up in a Lotus Esprit w/an SHO engine.

As for buying an old one now; it's a different story when you get one cheap and used vs. when it's new. I think it was '92/'93 when they upgraded the car, I'd get one of the later ones vs. an '89-'91. They can be reliable and they are fun, but you have a lot of upgrades to make to get the car into the territory it deserves. Prepare to get the best clutch you can buy (Ford clutches were good for 20-30,000 miles only), prepare to put in better struts, prepare to replace the engine mounts, prepare to put chassis braces in place, etc. It's a better used car/tuner to tinker with yourself than to deal with it's myriad factory flaws. You're not on the hook for warranty nor dealing w/crappy service departments that don't know about the car, don't care about it, nor a corporation whose only response to SHO owner's concerns was "you'll REALLY like the next one!!". Uh, there was no next one for me (and the V8 SHO's aren't fast enough). They simply didn't take the SHO project to the level it needed, they spent the whole budget w/Yamaha and cut every other corner they could. The engine is awesome. I've ridden in/driven Veyron's Contour SVT, the car reminds me a lot of my SHO, but it's better made and reliable. And slower , but it sounds about the same.

Re: Finished: Ford Taurus SHO

V8 SHO's are alright, they have ALOT of cam problems (so I've heard).. i also don't like the styling on them.

CSVT's.. lots of people call them mini-sho's. I owned one for a couple years a few years back but got rid of it due to insurance reasons. I still own a Contour.. just a base model (4 cylinder.. Much more reliable than a duratec in the long run)

If I got a SHO it would be the 3.2L (the newer gen.. but not the V8)

Re: Finished: Ford Taurus SHO

I'd say the 3.2 version is the best. Don't get the automatic.

Here's my 3.2 conversion that I never have completed. I'll finish it someday, it'll be red w/some decent rims probably from a Revell Tuner series model. Focus SVT stock rims might look really good on it.

I also did some dash/console work as well. Someday

Re: Finished: Ford Taurus SHO

Wow, that looks great. I had plans to get another SHo kit and convert it to non-plus. Still might do that.

Just looking at your's then glancing at mine.. wow you did a TON of work on that.. If I were you I'd cast it and sell it.

Bob just make sure when you build it that the drivers seat is all cracked and faded. I have yet to have seen a 88-95 SHO with leather seats that werent cracked really bad.
