I know I'm new around here..but..

Well alright, what's up guys, I know I'm new around here, but I'm not some little kid who loves the look of ricers and neons, so you guys can throw that idea out, I am however constantly learning about cars, and I was wondering if someone can help me out.

I got my license in January and my dad says its about time for me to get a job and a car.

Number 1:
I was going to get a 94 5.0 gt coupe mustang
Pros: It's a mustang, it's in mint condition, new clutch, new oem exhaust, and its running really clean
Cons: $60 dollars a week on gas, $4100+ in insurance a year, and the winter=no car, unless I take it 1mph through the city

Number 2:
I'm looking at 91 civic hatches (91-95), I know that the bubble butts are 92-95, but I like the 91's too.
Pros: I was on www.hmotorsonline.com, and they have FULL swaps, and I mean everything, some of you probally already know what I'm talking about, for the rest of you Honda dudes that haven't heard of it, go check it out.
I was thinking I buy a 91 civic hatch with a SOMEWHAT nice body, it doesnt really matter because I work on bodies as a hobby , and then after that buy a B16A and swap it in, because the harnesses are the same, and that will be the easiest swap.
Cons: I've never swapped anything except a 454 into a 76 blazer, and you guys know that was easy as hell, no electric really, but I need to know just exactly how much work is involved in the swap.

If anyone out there can help, that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Guys
Mike

P.S. I have $4000 to work with so I want to spend like -$2,500 on the car itself and then the rest for swap, and then I have to pay my dad back, pay for insurance, and pay for gas, not to mention any other expenses, but I'm sure I'm not the only one having this problem. So what would you guys do?

Re: I know I'm new around here..but..

sounds like a good idea to me lol 4th gens are awesome to work on..the 88-91 forum is really helpful because a lot of the people there have done the swaps and kno what to do. i'm gonna finish my swap after i wake up and have that thing done before dinner. dont kno if youll be able to do the swap right away unless you can find someone sellin a motor swap for cheap..if you get an si (which you should so you dont have to mess with dpfi to mpfi swap) you can beat on that and learn the car till you do your swap

Re: I know I'm new around here..but..

You should be able to get a 91 hatch for about $1000 or so. Civics are great cars, but it depends on what you are looking for. If you want cheap and readily available power, get the 5.0. If you feel like saving money on gas, get the civic. You can find yourself a decent b16 block to build and for total of $4500 you should be able to build yourself a decent ride. But most likely, it will still be slower than the 5.0 if naturally aspirated.

But to answer your question, there really isn't whole lot of thing that you need to worry about. I think some 91s had OBD0 but you might want to check on that. It is pretty minimal.

I think both cars are cool. It is up to you whether if you would like a V8 or I4. (IMO there are more performance parts available for the 91 hatch than the 94 Mustang). Good luck.

Re: I know I'm new around here..but..

hey... obd0 (88-91 hatch/civic) will be cheaper to build, a b16a obd1 is about a thousand bucks more expensive than a b16 obd0.... oh, for the most awesome car/motor setup, get a crx with a b16a in it with header, full exhaust, cold air, and underdrive pully and youll pull a 14 in the 1/4 easy, i got a civic with the d16z6, header cold air and full exhaust runnin a 15.6 in the 1/4... a crx being 800lbs or so lighter, you could easily beat a stang... my buddy with a 94 5.0 stang only pulled on me by about 2 cars in the 1/4... oh, and a 91 hatch is almost as light and everything is the same motor wise... i would either do crx or 91 hatch... and if you want to save weight, go for the base model POWER NOTHING! all the motors and sunroof kill ya!

Re: I know I'm new around here..but..

Well, I owe many thanks to all of you who replied, I've made up my mind, and I'm gonna get a 91, or 92-95 hatch, I'm trying to go obd0 b16a on the 91 hatch, and I think that will give it some go, and as for cheap swaps I was checking out HMO, they have so many swaps and stuff like that

www.hmotorsonline.com

they've got a FULL b16a conversion (swap) for 1600+ shipping and handling, I mean everything, tranny, axles, clutch, shift linkage..everything, so I'm gonna go with that, so plan on hearing about a 91 hatch with a b16a. I'll probally never find an si for the mpfi, so I guess that will come later, but its all cool, after my swap is finished, I'm gonna go a few bolt ons, until I have enough money...for example, cold air etc, but you guys were a great help, and I'm liking this forum, now I need to find a 91 hatch for under $1,500. If you guys can help with that, it would be a great help. It doesn't need to run seeing that I'm gonna rip the stock motor out anyway, but if its far away from me, it might have to run, I live in massachusetts by the way, I'd prefer the body to be in somewhat good condition, and a good undercarriage, I dont want cancer, well that's all I got for now, I've gotta study for finals.

Thanks
Mike

Re: I know I'm new around here..but..

i kno it probly says full swap and will come with a good majority of parts but make sure to add a few hundred to that for hoses, belts, fluids, bushings, wiring, and any other small things like bolts. I got a proclaimed full swap with the linkage, ecu, tranny, axles, int. shaft, motor, and mounts but you'll see that itll cost a little bit more to do it right..you might as well do it right the first time so you dont have to worry later on.

Re: I know I'm new around here..but..

if your lookin for a car, dont be afraid to ask people if they want to sell. last night me and my buddy saw a 92 hatch that looked clean and asked if he would take 500 for it (just to get it AMAZINGLY cheap) and he said no... then we said 1000 and hes like... ill let it go for 1000, i bought it with 30k miles and now its got 230k... im tired of lookin at it. the body is pretty clean and the interior is also good. oh, and also look for old people with those cars, they dont dog them and are too old to do the mantinence themselves so they ALWAYS take it to the shop... and there too old to drink anything without peeing 5 min. later so they dont drink in cars and screw up interiors....lol... oh, and stupid people that blew up the motor, or stripped it all out, let the cars go for way cheap. im buyin a 93 2dr. clean outside, stripped inside, still has everything though. no motor, for $300.... just look hard and youll come across a good deal, and if you find one... JUMP on it... i waited and got screwed. 300 bucks for a 91si crx with clean paint one dent an an a6... dude just wanted to get rid of it. i waited cause i had to ask me mom, 3 hours later it was sold.... i was pissed.

Re: I know I'm new around here..but..

yeah, i been looking all around my city, yesterday i was riding my bike and i came across this bubble butt hatch. So I thought to myself, maybe its for sale, so I left and about an hour later I went back and there was 2 guys working on another hatch. I stopped and asked them if it was for sale, but to no avail...but I stayed and hung out with them, I saw the front mount intercooler so I knew it was turbo'd...but believe me when I tell you, I DID NOT KNOW THAT THE TURBO WAS BIGGER THEN ANY I'VE SEEN. They replaced the dist and it started right away, then one kid got in the driver's seat, and the other kid said "watch this". The other kid put it in reverse, and then in first, and if you could just hear the turbo spool up, it sounded like a fighter jet plane, and we heard it 4blocks away......it was insane. I think they said "Conquest" turbo, or something like that. I think that hatch is pushing at least 400hp, and they're just getting started. I really need to find a 91 hatch, badly, heh, well I'm off for a while, later guys

yeah, I really want a 91, the obd0 will be cheaper, and easier for a swap, not to mention I think the 91's look better than the 92-95's. If anyone hears of any 91 in the northeast for sale, let me know, and eurobeaner, you can talk to me on AIM if ya have it (yungmike23 is my screename)
