Smile Questions to clear some stuff up...

Hey everybody,

Just sold my '83 S-10 for $550

my neighbor has an 80's style blazer (I think its an 85-87) he'll sell to me
other than it has a rust hole in the back corner, its in decent shape (though needs new tires)

but its the 2.8 fuel injected, 4 speed, and 4x4

I'm mostly "confused" by the 4x4, like:

is the 4x4 low any good with this engine?

how would you use it...
I mean like when can I shift it into a different gear range? going down the road, stopped?, etc?

any "known" problems with this model?
my '83 ran real nice (2.8 - 2 barrel) and the 5 speed in it didnt have a problem

thanks for any information replied

-Dio

Re: Questions to clear some stuff up...

Personally, me, myself and I would steer clear of something that old and apparently in only fair shape (the rust hole in the body is not indicative of a well cared for vehicle). The 4x4 system on a high mileage vehicle is a maintenance nightmare just waiting for a place to happen.... like when you decide to go off in boonies far from any easy access.

The 2.8L motor is pretty gutless and was marginal on a 2wd version. I'm not familiar with the 4WD system as to whether you have available a full-time and a part-time selection. Take a look at the selector on the floor and see what it's marked. Full-time 4WD typically allows you to operate the vehicle on any road surface and employs an internal differential in the transfer case to prevent driveline wind up. Part-time 4WD is for off-road use only and locks the front and rear drive shafts; if you use this on the street you'll severely damage the transfer case and axles. Usually, 4WD low range is available only in the part-time 4WD mode. Unless you have locking hubs on the front wheels, you should be able to shift into a 4WD mode while the truck is in motion (although it's usually done at a slow speed).

Re: Questions to clear some stuff up...

As long as it's mechanically good then it should be a good rig. I have no problems with my 85 worth mentoning.

Look at patch panels ar Rock Auto, they're cheaper than you can imagine.

Re: Questions to clear some stuff up...

Blazer is down here in New Mexico (between Arizona and Texas)
it may have been up state before though...

not sure about the miles on it, I know its just been sitting for a long time, granted, so was my S-10 when I bought it, and that truck still fired right up after some work

as for the 4x4 part, it has the selector for
2 high
4 high
and 4 low
