Who's towing what? 2002 2dr 2wd 2.0 5spd

I'm testing a 2002 2dr 2wd 2.0 5spd right now that belongs to a friend that recently retired. It was his work car and now he doesn't need it. I got 29 mpg on the first tank of gas on the 100 mile round trip I make each day to work. My question is about towing with these vehicles. Is anyone towing anything as big as a 17 foot aluminum fishing boat? The frame is drilled and tapped for the hitch. I really think the 2.0 has the power to pull the boat. I'm most concerned about the car being big enough to slow the boat down and keep it under control and behind where it belongs. I will not tow over long runs. I will tow about 15 miles over a considerable mountain to the fishing spots. Can anyone relay any stories about experience towing with these vehicles?
