z6 engine rebuild then turbo setup
ok,after about a week of non-stop searching about what im wanting to do,
I think I've come to a conclusion, heres what I THINK my setup is going to be: 1st the engine(going to rebuild): its a d16z6 with 200,000miles, nippon low compression pistons, eagle rods, stock crank, stage 2 clutch, lightweight flywheel.12lbs..(or OEM) would be brand new no matter what. head: d15b7 head milled, already rebuilt, ARP studs y8 head gasket?(i guess./havent decided) Turbo: I'm guessing a t3,a smaller turbo,I want my car for daily driving, & the race track,I know it spool up quicker, use my gas around town, but I'm not too into the lag thing w/bigger turbos, I plan on building everything myself, pipes & all, intercooler, header or manifold??(I like the header looks better, but the mani looks stronger turbo timer, boost controller, boost gauge. Fuel: 255 fuel pump, AEM FPR, 450cc injectors(I guess), AC AUTOTECHNIC Fuel Rail, fuel pressure gauge, FMU::: (do I need?)its not a big deal but just askin other stuff: 3" exhaust???(not sure,I have a 2" already, sucks I gotta do it again) I'm guessing 2.5 inch,I already have duals with brand new mufflers,& their inlet is 2.5,(make everything flow better) high flow cat, (2.25 inlet,2.5 outlet, thinking of cutting that 2.25 inlet, making it bigger) & I think thats it, other things I have in mind or thought about, was a block guard or sleeves, just to be on the safe side, block guard is cheaper.... I'm going to build the motor first then wear it in, then build the turbo stuff afterwards, I'm not too familar with boost & how much pushes what, but I dont plan on hitting an outragous boost,(not sure what that would be;;like 12 or over im guessing) but help me out on this setup guys, its serious money & I want to be on the safe side but still have boost. I'm open to any questions, comments or anything. Randy

Re: z6 engine rebuild then turbo setup
Why are you running a b7 head?? I'd run a A6 or a Z6 head before a b7. As far as the FMU goes, I don't think you'll need it if you are running the 450cc injectors and the upgraded fuel pump. Also, another thing that I didn't see you mention was engine management - that is the key to any good reliable turbo setup. Usually this means adding some kind of air-to-fuel and timing management system. A AFC or rechipped ecu running turbo-edit or other comparable software should work awesome for you.

Re: z6 engine rebuild then turbo setup
I had a b8 block with an 8 valve head,so I swapped over to the b7,(rebuilt)
I know I should of(z6,a6),but its already rebuilt, what I also was thinking,(in the long run, after the turbo install,) I wanted to rebuild a head, but thats a performance camshaft, performance springs, retainers, another head gasket set (talkin about a slightly rough idle) & I think the b7 head wouldn't do too bad, the camshaft was in excellent shape, goes up to 7000rpm, new valves, new seals,resurfaced,<--I know the turbo wont like that, but if ppl put turbos on stock bottom ends & stock heads, I dont think the b7 would heart, diffenitley already rebuilt, but from what I've read the head doesn't matter on a turbo(which it does,im not stupid),but the heads for reving,(I may get alot of flame for what I just said) but also on the engine management, I have a A/F gauge & I forgot to list a wideband 02 sensor, (am I supposed to run a narrow band all the time?)just a question I've seen ppl ask. also,an APEXI VTEC CONTROLLER (afc?) ... but I dont have vtec?(so I thought I couldn't run one,) but if it was up to me I would buy one,it would help me out, can I run a vtec A/F controller without vtec? & on a chipped ecu,I thought turbo wasn't good with a chip.. but anyways,a chip wouldn't help me out on: (am I running lean or rich) I know I need something to let me know thanks for the reply (I just done a little bit searching,& what about somthing like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/PIVOT...QQcmdZViewItem it seems ok,& the A/F gauge /while running wideband,/will let me know if I'm running rich or lean..right?) come across : Apexi Super S-AFC-2 will do the job! so thats on my list also.

Re: z6 engine rebuild then turbo setup
Actually if your run turbo edit you can do everything you can do with the AFC but built into your ecu - it's all adjustable. You can adjust your fuel maps and your timing maps however you want from inside the ecu. Also, I think if you have a laptop in your car you can read the a/f from the ecu. Personally if you are serious about doing sometime of nice o2 sensor, the wideband o2 sensors are way more accurate and much better for tuning your car. Check into the turbo edit - it's free software, all you have to get is the chip for your ecu. All I'm going to be using on my turbo setup is just the chipped ecu and a couple gauges, that's it. I might eventually get a stand alone wideband o2,.
