yet another strange problem

This one has nothing to do with driveability or anything like that, it's just stupid and annoying. I have a '93 lumina (column shift) and the little orange indicator that tells you what gear you're in does not work. It happened about two years ago, I stopped the car, put it in park and heard this noise like fishing line being broken "twannnng." What the heck was that? Well I guess it was that thin wire that connects that little orange indicator to the shifter, telling you what gear you're in. Not a big deal, but whenever someone else drives my car, I tell them "count to three" Reverse, Neutral, and yes Overdrive, and you're good to go. I can't figure out how to fix this, believe me I've spent hours....well maybe two hours, trying to figure this one out. If anyone has any suggestions on how to fix it, please let me know.
