Hello All!
I have a '97 Honda Passport which ran virtually repair except for two batteires, starter and changing the timing belts. But lately I had to replace the alternator (the original) and my truck is revving high when it first starts and then it stalls when I get to a complete stop...intermittently. To it to a dealer and ran a diagnostics ($100) and stated the egr and IAC valves needs to replace and slush out the system for carbon. I am pretty mechanical and want to do the repairs myself, the dealer wants $1500 to do the repairs, where are these two parts located on the engine? Thanks in advance! |

Re: Where are the EGR and Idle Air Controller Valves located?
Wow! $1500??? EEEKK!!!
Do NOT replace the EGR without first cleaning it, the throttle body and the MAF sensor, as these can all lead to the EGR not running efficiently. To clean the MAF, look for a cylinder/metal looking type part just barely behind your air filter box, unplug the electrical connection, and take apart the air intake tube. The MAF sensor is 3 tiny wire looking connections inside of a round cylinder metal part - these must be cleaned VERY carefully and do NOT drop this part. I simply used electrical parts cleaner, but some stores now carry a $3 spray can specifically designed for MAF sensors. Do NOT use anything else, or you will be replacing this item. I'll continue onto the EGR & Throttle body soon as I get home. Got an appt to rotate/balance my tires.

Hang in there, haven't forgotten you. I WILL get back with you - I'm VERY sorry, I have my G-ma staying with me right now, and the kids are howlering for dinner. Post more tonight!

Re: Where are the EGR and Idle Air Controller Valves located?
Ok, hopefully you found the MAF (mass air flow sensor) located just behind the air filter box. To make it easier, unplug all electrical sensors going up the whole air intake tubing to where it meets at the throttle body. Take off the whole tube, and set it aside.
Before you do this though, you need a can of air intake/throttle body cleaner, I do not recommend carborator (sp?) cleaner. After you take off the tube, you'll find the throttle body butterfly (probably covered with black crud) mine was. Now you can either take apart the whole throttle body, or clean it on the truck - I chose to leave it on the truck. Put a couple shop rags just below the butterfly, and have at it with the spray can - make sure truck is NOT running. Clean the outside of the butterfly as well as as far inside the throttle body as you can, try not to allow too much gunk to go into the manifold. Before you're complete, however, if you look just behind the throttle body, up against the fire-wall, you'll find what looks like an upside down black canister with an electrical sensor and two bolts, this is your EGR valve. There are more thorough directions located in the FAQ's thread as a sticky at the top of this forum - the directions are listed for 98+ years, but they work for the 97 as well. I recommend replacing the EGR valve gasket however, as after this many years, the seal is quite stuck and I don't believe mine has a good seal right now. I didn't replace the gasket, but will this coming weekend. I believe you may have to repeat these procedures another time or two over the course of a few weeks, but it greatly helped my idling by cleaning the throttle body. If you need more help, just give me a post.
