1989 Civic w/ 168,000ish miles. What maintainance should I do ASAP; Want to see 500k!
Okay,
I am going to be purchasing a 1989 Honda Civic this weekend. What maintainance should I do right off the bat to insure that the car will last. Half a million miles a good target for me .I know the car has a new radiator, new tires, new brakes, but I am not sure what else the car has had done. It has had three previous owners counting my friend who has not driven the hell out of it. I would like to... change the timing belt change the water pump change the oil change the transmission fluid (how hard) change power steering (does it even have one) Check for leaks Spark Plugs (What type and gap are recommended?) change Radiator/flush WHAT ELSE AM I MISSING? I will also clean the PCV valve and EGR Valve (not sure if it has one) Sorry for all the chadder, but I am new to this and excited. Although old, this car appears to be a great car! A steal at $700~~! |

change the timing belt
change the water pump -Do these two things together, but its really not required. change the oil -put in 10w30 or 5w30 with an OEM honda filter change the transmission fluid (how hard) -put in honda MTF, not too hard, but be careful not to overfill, i overfilled and now my tranny leaks change power steering (does it even have one) -you got a manual rack and pinion steering (no PS) Check for leaks Spark Plugs (What type and gap are recommended?) -get a set of NGKs, also as far as ignition, change spark plug wires, dizzy and rotor if they are in bad shape or worn out. change Radiator/flush -didnt you say the radiator was new?? why change it? just flush your coolant. Ive got a STD hatch with a d15b1 with about 165k in good shape excpet for a little tranny leak. My timing belt and water pump are still original...and ive got no problems, don't know if you really have to change these parts, but its up to you. Go ahead and clean your PCV, or if its real bad just change it. Good luck to you man, with all this maintence your 4th gen shall last a lifetime. Past 500k....if you love your car your car shall love you back...
