1995 lumina car 3.1 bucks in overdrive
I am puzzeled to what would make my car buck,or miss at high speeds ,pulling a gradual hill and when its warm ,wont do it when its cold, have put new plug wires in and plugs ,i just put this reman engine in and this problem exsisted with the old motor ,one mechanic told me it might be the tcc solenoid, also no codes or check engine light if i increase speed it will eventually go away.also in drive it seems to not be happening, other than this issue car runs good and idles like a kitten. anyone have any thoughts?

Re: 1995 lumina car 3.1 bucks in overdrive
Did you change the EGR or use the original, also have you used all the original sensors? You could have a mechanical failure of the EGR, which might not throw a code.

Re: 1995 lumina car 3.1 bucks in overdrive
Just for the record: the ECM tests the EGR valve in 2 ways: first, electrically as said above: if voltage is not OK because of faulty solenoid coil or connector, it will throw a code. But when the car runs at steady speed with TCC off, the computer occasionally "tests" the EGR by opening or closing the 3 port EGR sections or slightly moving the linear valve model and it expects the RPM to change a little. If no change (like in case of a mechanical failure) , it will throw a code.
About TCC bucking: a forum member recently changed the TCC solenoid valve (3 speed transmission) from the driver side wheel well....and solved similar symptoms...but there are several "look alikes" with those symptoms... Photo1 Photo2 Photo3

so do you have to drop trans from car or as it looks from you pictures you can do it without trans removal.

Re: 1995 lumina car 3.1 bucks in overdrive
The last couple of posts to you I think refer to the 4T40 transmission.(3 speed with TCC) Your car should have the 4T60E. (4 speed with TCC). Your symptom still sounds like an ignition miss. Make sure your plugs are tight in the heads and you didn't crack one during installation and your new wires are decent. Check the coils for output, should jump spark an inch easy. If your convinced it's not ignition, this trans can have TCC problems but it's usually not the solenoid. The convertor can slip it self or they had alot of valving problems in these also, expecially in the year you have. It what you're feeling is quick jerks, I still think it's ignition. The TCC will "shudder" or the RPM will vary but it won't be so sudden like a missfire.

Re: 1995 lumina car 3.1 bucks in overdrive
First, look on gear shift selector and see how many gears you have. Either you have 1-2-D or 1-2-D-OD. The first is the 4T40 and the second is the 4T60. The 4T60 is in 2 versions. A straight 4T60 or an electronic shift version which is 4T60E. Also, look on the bottom pan and see if the tranny number is there. In addition, the 4T40 has a smaller side pan (drivers side, covers half the tranny) and the 4T60 side pan covers the whole drivers side of tranny.
Your car probably has the 4T60 because of the 3.1 but you never know. |

Re: 1995 lumina car 3.1 bucks in overdrive
well i had a 1989 chevy beretta and i put a 3.1 in it(from a 2.8) and when i test drove it i had your problem my thermosstat would either run at 218 or 150 degrees farenhiet it stuck both ways so i thought it would be smart to just take it out and the car ran at 150 (with cooling fan always on) that did not fix the problem u and i share(d) then i figured it out i must of read the haynes manual a billion times and i learned that if the temp sensor is not in the right tempature range the egr and tcc will act goofy it will turn on and off . does your car overheat/underheat. if not check for a bad temp sensor or guage the guages and sensors are knowing not to give accurate readings. hope i have been to some assistance just remember the temp sensor runs a lot of stuff and some there is not trouble codes |

Re: 1995 lumina car 3.1 bucks in overdrive
Same here, no trouble codes.
It does not overheat for sure, but it does stick a little below half on the guage. I have been thinking of getting a stand alone set of three guages to see oil, temp, volt since the car is getting up in age. 95 3.1 with 150K. I will compare the factory guage to the aftermarket one and see. Will keep you posted what I find. Thanks for the info.
