Blew my head gasket today... (Blown turbo)

Consistant thick white smoke through the exhasut. Car died at a stop light, turned over, drove for 10 seconds & my friend who was behind me called me to tell me to pull over.. It's on a trailer right now on its' way upto a friends garrage. I'm looking all over for some 7bolt head studs, but at 6:30pm on a saturday their is little I can do. I've got a call in from somone I know who has some ARP's. I'm hopeing he'll call tonight so I can get this done.. If not I'm going to have no choice but to re-use my 125k old head studs untill I can find some new ones. Thats like using dental floss as climbing rope...

Not cool...

Re: Blew my head gasket today...

ouch man that sucks. I wouldn't use the old head studs no matter what since they have already stretched for sure. I'm surprised because I thought your water injection would have killed any knock leading to a bad head gasket. Let us know where it blew.

Re: Blew my head gasket today...

I'm leaving in a few minuets. The water wasn't the problem, the problem was running 22psi through this 14b at 32lb/min with 2 bottles of 12 ounce heat mixed into a half gallon of -20deg winsheild washer fluid with a supper lean tune..... I had to lean my fuel sliders out really, really far with this m7 injector, 3-4 clicks from the very bottem (15:1 est) to get my PLX to read 12.0:1.. Felt great for the half of a day I've had it dialed in..... I'm still hopeing the turbo went and fucked it's self. Though A head gasket would be ALOT cheaper then a new turbo right now.... I just need to dig into it...

Re: Blew my head gasket today...

you were going WOT? Did the knock CEL flash at all? I'm not familiar with any type of injection yet, so I don't quite understand why you had to lean out to 15:1 just to get to 12:1. I'm sure you know the drill on how to see if it's a blown turbo or blown headgasket, let us know what's up

Re: Blew my head gasket today...

To make a 23 hour story short the turbo decited to give up the locking nut on the compressor wheel, when I took the intake off a good amount of oil was waiting for me, along with that nut.. After getting the turbo off, the turbine wheel & half the shaft were pinned aginstest the o2 sensor. It was actuall really cool to see how this thing took its' own life.. I was a little impressed. No shaft play smoke show for this little pimp! He decited to puke 3 quarts of oil dirrectly into my 3in turbo back! Their was some oil in the lower intercooler pipes, and FMIC, nothing to gripe about.

It wasn't all bad, we had some downtime around 3am so I went to town on a little 14b we took off one of my friends 1g. I Ported the 02/exducer housing/turbo/manifold. Anyway. unfortinatly it was the turbo, but whatever, I didn't want to buy a new turbo utill I knew what I wanted, looks like that plan changed! I'll probably just trade my friend a 90 oil filter housing, cometic head gasket and some older style clevitte 77 main/rod just so I don't have to make a decision just yet...

Re: Blew my head gasket today...

You know, I saw that in your sig as I started to read this thread, sweet. That turbo is awesome for street cars.

I had a similar thing happen, but in my case the turbine wheel came clean off at the shaft. It shaved the O2 sensor off flush with the inside of the O2 housing and shot out the exhaust and backwards down the track. The track officials brought it over to me after it cooled off a bit That's what I get for running a tired old 14b with the flapper locked shut. I keep it in the car as a reminder of the good old days...

Re: Blew my head gasket today...

Wow.... I keep my bent valves and other stuff I break, but I think a turbine wheel takes the cake.
