Changing plugs and wires on Sunfire

I have a code P0302 on my 96 Sunfire, 2.4L w/ manual trans. Misfire in cylinder 2. I'm going to start w/ the plugs and wires. Anyone know how hard they are to get to and change? Any advice or tips would be appreciated. Thanks, Guy

no wires, take off the cover that says twin cam 2.4L (4 bolts) there will be boots and springs ant connect the coil packs to the coils. Remember to unhook the wire harness before you throw the cover on the floor, the wires arent that long.

Thank you. Are the plugs easy to get to and change? Guy

Re: Changing plugs and wires on Sunfire

Once you get the cover off they are fairly easy to get at and change. The hardest part is getting the cover back on properly so that you dont have a misfire. I have changed the plugs on 2 of these engines and both times I screwed up when I put that cover back on it on the first try lol.

How do you know if you put it on correctly? I had a misfire on cylinder 2, and I replaced the plugs and boots. I had a hell of a time putting the cover back on. The car started, but the misfire continues. How do I know?

Re: Changing plugs and wires on Sunfire

All that I did was just take the cover off and try again there is a chance that you didnt get all the boots over top of all the spark plugs that was what the problem was for me. It's kind of hard to see to get it so that all the plugs are actually connected to the coils. I am thinking though that this is not your problem. It sounds like it could be time for you to replace your coils. Which I think would involve having to replace the entire cover.

Good Luck getting it fixed.

if you are still having the problem.. I am sure you the plastic coil houseing is bad.. (tower) not a very expensive part to replace.. It replaces plug wires..

Re: Changing plugs and wires on Sunfire

it usualy takes putting the boots on the towers, then watching as you lower the cover onto the plugs. once you get the boots lined up with the plugs, let the cover down, then press into place and adjust to line up the bolt holes. Don't put the bolts in one at a time, set them in and get all of them started before tightening them down, it saves frustration. Also, look into RKSports boot covers, and boot sets, they work like racing wires for cars.
