94 Ranger 2.3L 5 Spd Clutch Replacement

Hi everyone,

Well, it looks like I have a rear oil seal leaking and I figured while I was in there, I would go ahead and change the pilot bearing, rear crankshaft seal, flywheel, clutch disc, pressure plate, slave cylinder, throw-out bearing and rear seal for the transmission.

Today, I dropped the drive shaft, removed the starter, pulled out the gear shift lever and disconnected all the electrical connectors and disconnected the clutch hydraulic line. I'm going to put in fresh transmission fluid, so I went ahead and drained that also.

I started taking pictures today and thought that I would document this project for anyone that's interested. Let me know if you're interested and I'll keep taking the pictures as the job progresses and will do a write-up on the ordeal.

Hopefully, the transmission will be out tomorrow.

I'd be very interested in any documentation you can provide. My 93 2.3L 5-speed has either a transmission fluid or clutch hydraulic fluid leak, so I'm looking at a similar repair.
I'm hoping to narrow down the souce of the leak tomorrow. The evidence is somewhat contradictory: the fluid is dripping at a rate of a few drops every day off the rear end of the transmission case, but the transmission fluid level is full. On the other hand, there is no evidence of leaking fluid under the bell housing, but the clutch fluid reservoir is very low.

I'm about to replace the clutch on one of my kid's '93 4cyl Nissan pickup. The hydraulic operating cyl is outside the bell... kinda a throwback. Fulcrum lever operates the throwout bearing. Pilot bearing is required because of side thrust to tranny input shaft.

I've never (yet) done a Ranger; but wonder if a pilot bearing is used. ???

I,too, would like to see some photos/writeup of your work ... I'll probably be doing a Ranger before too long.

Can you tell by looking at the color of the fluid? The transmission fluid is nothing more than DextronIII ATF. If it's coming from out around the rear of the transmission extention then it's got to be a rear seal in the back of the transmission. That's a easy fix! (Just drop the drive-shaft for that one and replace the seal).

And of course you know the color of the clutch fluid which is nothing more than brake fluid.

If your clutch master cylinder is low, then it sounds like you have a leak in the clutch slave cylinder if you don't see any external leaks. Mine was leaking a little after it was torn down, but not to the point of seeing it outside the case. In any event, if it turns out to be this, you're going to have to pull the transmission. If you have to do that, you just as well change everything in there (clutch, pressure plate, throw-out bearing, slave cylinder, flywheel, etc.) You don't want to redo anything later down the road. Hope this helps you out!

i have the same exact year, trans and engine. i am reaching my 200,000 soon so it will be wise for me to get what info i can on the clutch replacement. pictures would be a major help!!
