alternator problems? or just a Screwed up car?

so, last night i was leaving a friends house to head home, and i started my 97 z22 cav to find that the check batt light was on, so i assumed it was because my batt isn't the best and i had the rear window defoger on. so i turned off the rear defog. about 2 minutes into the driving the headlights dimmed out and the gauges started to drop and the engine sputtered when i floored it. so i managed to slowly/darkly coast home with no electronics. then when i tried to reverse into the driveway...nothing! it stalled and died and i cannot get it going with a boost so. i'm no expert but right now i'm thinking alternator. maybe belt???. but i'm ruleing out battery, what do you think?

Yeah I would say it's probably the altenator. And I wouldnt think that the rear defog would drain that much juice from the car.

Re: alternator problems? or just a F**Ked up car?

why are you ruling out the battery? just cuz the boost didnt work?? ive had batteries soo dead that not even a jump start (boost) would help. if thats the case, DONT rule out the battery, if it was your belt your power steering would have quit working and your car would have overheated in about 2-3 minutes, it definetely sounds like an alternator/battery issue, luckily both of those can be tested for free at most auto parts stores

also, the rear defroster does take a pretty good amount of juice believe it or not

ya i figured the same with checking the eblts and everything. but i've seen similar problems like this one and just chucked 70 dollars to get a second hand alternator, put it on out in the drive way about 5 hours ago and shes been doing great ever since. well the car still accelerates like a dodge shadow with 3 flats, but thats a part of owning a cavalier
