Porsche 944 vs BMW 530i

First race in a while...thought I'd throw up a post here. Very slow at work and I'm bored!

I was in the fwy on-ramp lane with a solid white line, and just as the on-ramp curves away from the road this pinhead in a brand new black 530i swings over from the *left* lane, no signal, and cuts me off to get on to the freeway. "What a schmuck" I'm thinking. This ramp is a long, banked right hand sweeper so I figure I'll tail him just for fun.

We get down to the bottom and he's tailing the guy in front of him, getting ready to swing out into traffic. "What the heck...I'll give it a shot" I think to myself.

Sure enough, he punches it and swings around a truck into an open lane. I predicted the move and hit the gas at the same time. To my surprise, we had gone from 60-100 and he had not managed to put more than 3 feet of gap between us. He changed lanes and shut down, so I slowed to a more normal pace after passing him and went on my way.

N/A 944 = 530i.

shweet! I hate Bimmers in the same way Mustang drivers hate SRT-4s

Its usually some preppy nerd with mommy and daddy financial or some fag realestate agent who cant tell ya what B.M.W. stands for.
very rarely do you find a BMW owner who is also car educated.

Still had paper plates on it. Driver was a young punk-ass wearing a sideways hat and all. Gotta love the OC.

My car is an '88 944, non turbo, with a few bolt-ons and minor weight reduction. I think the 530i is around 225hp and 214tq...at least, it was in 2004.

Its the wieght that kills it, I've never had a problem pulling on NA 944s. Still wouldn't mind one though. Nice little track car, that or an FC. Good hang though, what bolt ons?

Re: Porsche 944 vs BMW 530i

Let's see...head is rebuilt, no port work but compression was raised to 11.1:1. Adjustable cam gear to get the cam timing back into spec, it's advanced about 2 degs. Nology ign coil and wires. 2.5" exhaust w/ 2.5" cat. Chip. Lightened flywheel and Centerforce DF clutch. Balance shaft belt deleted (shafts will be removed all together when I pull the engine...A/C is coming out soon too).

Semi-stripped interior...and it was a bare-bones model to start with. It's about 130 lbs lighter than most other 944's. I plan to take another ~100 lbs off over the next couple weeks...front carpet and tarpaper, interior blower fan, etc.

It's mainly my track car. The Volvo is my daily but it's got a blown H/G at the moment. If I was in the Volvo, the 530 would have been eaten alive.

Ah nice, then your 944 would probably take me. I've walked away from just about every 944 I've raced. The turbos on the other hand...

Re: Porsche 944 vs BMW 530i

Sounds like your 944 is no slouch. I used to own one but broke the timing belt and said f-it... I pretty much ran out of money but it was a cool car.

Re: Porsche 944 vs BMW 530i

Yeah, 944's are kind of pigs from the factory. They handle well, but are grossly underpowered. Not many people mod N/A 944's because it is always cheaper to buy a Turbo instead. But I'm stubborn and I want to do a few more things to my N/A. Next mods planned are a cam (supposed to be a big gain from a cam in this car...and it better be for $450), and swapping to a hot-wire MAF setup w/ an Apex-i SAFC II Select for fuel control.

I should be sitting at about 175hp right now. Once I get the other things done, I am hoping for 190+. My goal is 200 crank or 150+ whp. But when I hit the wall power-wise, I will switch my focus to making her lighter. I know for a fact that 944 Spec cars (130-135whp, and 2400 lbs curb weight) are considerably faster than 944 Turbos on the track, so I am heading in that direction.

RedNeck383...you're in Long Beach?

If it was new, it should be 255. Either way, what a douche.

Your 1996 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 is the 92nd out of the 315 that were made that year. Only 21 of which are exactly identical.

Sounds like you have a sweet ride. My 944 had a K&N box and 2.5" exhaust and that was about it. Honestly, when I had that ride I didn't really know much about performance. I shaved some weight by removing the upper part of the rear seat but I added 2 12" Lanzar subs so it didn't help much. I miss that car sometimes... GL
