Valve replacement - head

Anyone have a link on what to check for to see if valves need to be replaced. None are bent, but a couple are blackish. Ill post pics up tomorrow, just seeing if I should rebuild the head or not.

Re: Valve replacement - head

They all look like they seat properly...for one cylinder it looks like the intake/exhaust valves are slightly open but I think thats just the position of the cam. I need to adjust everything before I get a timing belt.

Re: Valve replacement - head

How many miles are on the head. If it has never had a valve job I would go ahead and get one done. You dont have to put new valves in just have a shop regrind the seats.

Re: Valve replacement - head

If you have the patience, and some elbow grease, get some valve grinding compound and turn them by hand. Saves some money, and in most cases, time. Ive yet to find a drill that I can attach to spin them, but turning them with a rag for grip works fine for me.

Re: Valve replacement - head

if the head is off, you can pour some oil into the intake/exhaust port and see if it leaks around the valve. This is assuming that the valve is still being held in place by the spring.

I would get new valves if you are going to get the seats redone. Then you don't have to worry about that carbon build up and such. I like new stuff.

Re: Valve replacement - head

This is what they look like, once I turned the exhaust cam a 1/4 turn the exhaust valves in cylinder 3 seated correctly.
