4ws prelude to crx

some if not all 87 up preludes had 4ws ( 4 wheel steering)

has it ever been swaped into a crx?

is it even possible?

is it even worth it?

the prelude was the best handling car in 1987 in the slalom at 65.5 MPH better tehn teh vette at 64.1 mph. BECAUSE of the 4ws from my understanding.... or would it be more worth it to just invest in some REALLY kick arse suspension.

Looking at autocrossing a crx.

Re: 4ws prelude to crx

The prelude an crx are so different its not even funny, I would say possible, but would cost more than a new car....a new new car....the prelude is a MUCH bigger car, without serious aftermarket help and major tuning it would never handle right, 4ws or not. You'd be less off-your-rocker to suggest putting the civic 4wd under a crx...and from my understanding, the 88 crx (or maybe just civic) had passive rear steering or something...that was removed in later years because of complaints of twitchyness...or is this just an urban legend thats been spread?

88 crx and civic did have passive rear steering like jdm type r model... was discontinued due to "twitchiness."

Re: 4ws prelude to crx

It means that when you turn there is a slight drift feeling and it scares people. Hell, I drift all the time because my 14s just can't grip hard enough at decent speed. I've gotten used to it, but I try to slow down these days cuz my suspension sucks. If I had an 88 maybe it would handle the corners better. Anyway, autoxers love the 88 for this reason.

Re: 4ws prelude to crx

It was supposed to make it more agile, probably meant that most people didnt like the way it would steer more quickly than the input they gave the wheel, or because it would steer sharper than they liked..

Plushy pussy wussy Ha Ha Ha! 2000 Toy Tacoma 4x4. Right off the showroom and to the shock installer. No way I was going to drive it like that.I swear I had to panic stop and I thought the rear was off the ground Mushy wushY

And can anyone bring us up to date on the rear steer 88 crx(Don't mean to hi-jack.)
What does it include?
Does it include the Si (I don't see anything that would allow the rear wheels to pivot on mine)

Re: 4ws prelude to crx

Found this on another board...Makes sense, almost like reactive caster on cars...

I dont want to disrupt everyones trip down memory lane, but since lots of ppl are reading this, i thought id clear the air about the 88 rear suspension.

Its true that the 88 rear lower control arm was unique in the US and shared only with the Integra Type R which is nearly identical. Its nothing similar to the NSX. It is however the same in nearly all civic and integra models from 1988-2000 sold in Japan. For some quirky reason, the civics and integras except as noted sold in the US had the cast lower control arm. What can be sure is that the difference in control arms offers no tangible difference in handling and performance. The geometry of the arm is identical and size of bushings are nearly the same between different arms.

Part of the lore of the CRX is that the 88 year had different handling and was changed for later years, which is then attributed to the change in the rear lower control arm. This actually is true, but not because of the lower control arm. It is the placement of the rear compensator arm (toe arm) to the chassis that was adjusted in years after 88. This change causes the dynamic toe change in the rear suspension to be less pronounced throughout the wheels vertical travel, making it less "twitchy", especially during hard braking. Some call it "passive rear steering", but all Honda's have it to some degree, front and rear. Its just part of how honda designs their suspension. Honda simply retuned it after feedback from racing experience here in the US and perhaps customers. But because the change was made to the chassis, it cannot be changed by switching parts between model years without rewelding the bracket the bushing bolts to on the chassis.

Got it. The suspension flex's, and the angle gives simulated steer Hmmm. COOL I know it corners but now I know why!

Thanks Frodo
It is cool learning about what designs went into your car. And what makes it different.
